Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

I assume the 0.8% 'other' is the added vitamin C, and yes a senior dog can eat this, although some senior dogs do better on a slightly lower bone percentage (less the 10%), Natural Instinct do a Senior formula which might be better, also contains glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support x

I’ve seen that but unfortunately the senior blend isn’t suitable as he can only eat turkey, I may have to add a little more meat as I agree he may need a lower bone percentage

I think the calculator needs to be updated. My dog is 35kg and according to naturalinstinct.com he needs £2.14 worth of this food per day, not £1.74 as stated on this website.

I've been feeding Natural Instinct for a few years now. My dogs love it and thrive on it. I've tried them on similar products but have always come back to NI as I think the quality is so good and it's the one my dogs do best on. I've been given a tour of their production plant a couple of times and can vouch for the quality of the raw meat, veg and fruit, and the cleanliness of the production line.

We discovered the benefits of raw feeding when one of our dogs developed
a skin complaint and various treatments from the vet did nothing except
lower our bank balance. Just two weeks on Natural Instinct and there
was a huge improvement. Three years on and she often gets comments on
how wonderful her coat is. All our dogs are now fed Natural Instinct and
we wouldn't use anything else.

this used to be an exceptional product however over recent weeks it seems to have changed and seems to have got lots of air in the tub, plus the dogs don't seem to be enjoying it as much as have now changed supplier and things are much improved. RAW food is most definitely the way forward.

I've never experienced any changes at all. You should speak to them - they're very knowledgeable and reasonable as well as welcoming to any feedback.

We have switched our Cavalier from James Wellbeloved / NatureDiet to Natural Instinct predominantly due to his problems with colitus. Since we have switched, he is a different dog. His coat is improved, his breath (at both ends!) is lovely, he is lively and wants to play, he has no sensitivity around his tummy which he had before, he has no bloating and he absolutely LOVES the food ! Most importantly his output improved virtually overnight and he has gone from 4 huge stinky messy poos a day to 1 or 2 so hard they bounce, bullet sized poos a day !!!! And his anal glands appear to be emptying themselves now as well !! Wish we had done it sooner.
