Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

72 out of 100 - Good
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin: United Kingdom
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Fantastic dog food, perfect for my working dog, everything you could want for in a dry kibble, I phoned their nutritionist to help advise me on what might be suitable, and I could not be happier. I have done hours and hours of research and am Glad I came across Millies 👍🏼

I really like this company. My cats have their lionheart brand and dogs have wolfheart salmon and veg.We ordered samples of each food to trial, but unfortunately they arrived underweight. They have us a refund of our shipping costs and sent out new food the same day.The pets love this food too. Our dog used to be on Tails, but now his stools are much smaller, firmer and way less stinky.

Last month MW sent this bag in error (instead of the countryside mix I ordered) which I only realised after opening it as the packages are very similar. Our dog does not tolerate salmon (loose stools) therefore the bag was of no use. MW could understandably not accept a return of the opened bag but refused to offer any sort of recompense for their error leaving us stuck with a £53 bag we cannot use.I was offered a £2 refund because the salmon+veg was £2 less than countryside mix and they had the cheek to call this a 'gesture of goodwill'! I was offered a conversation with a nutritionist which was of no use as I know my dog tolerates countryside mix.It appears they would rather lose a regular customer than take any responsibility for their error.

That's awful! They've lost this potential customer as well ... I was considering giving it a try but won't bother now!

I have used Millie Wolfheart' kibble for my young lab and old terrier for two years and found the people there very helpful. I changed both dogs from a raw diet, as the lab wasn't doing at all well on it. I spoke to MW's nutritional who couldn't have been more helpful and initially I used the mix she suggested, I have changed the mix for variety and found both dogs thrive on any of their mixes. I'm really surprised that another customer had a negative response from them. The food is, in my opinion, reasonably priced, an excellent balance and my dogs are healthy with glossy coats, good skin and the correct weight for their breed.

Another vote from us, we get the salmon recipe fairly often and we too will stick with Millies from now on. 5 star food at a reasonable price and service has been exemplary. Just a pity it's not in more retail outlets as many have still never heard of it.

great food and great service as always, the salmon was too rich for our boxer boy so he is now settled on a different flavour, no funny tums and firm poos all round, his skin is also improving after a long battle with allergies

Very strange this does not have the complete 5 stars, super grain free kibble

We have a boy who kept coming up in rashes after more than a few trips to the vet I realised that he would stop eating, come up in a rash and chew himself raw I'd then change his food to get him to eat again. He was already on a high quality sensitive hypo allergenic diet and it came to me that in all likely hood he was gluten intolerant Then I found the answer this wonderful stuff, www.millieswolfheart.co.uk it solved my boys skin problem and has given him an amazingly shiny coat . I swear by this stuff so much so I've put both my dogs on it. I have ordered a small bag of their countryside range which is lamb, duck with rabbit 70/30 I HOPE YOU WILL REVIEW THIS ONE Millies Wolfheart ranges are for us simply the best!
