Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Well, I am going to try Orijien after buying a small bag from a pet store after staying longer at a friend's than I had anticipated. But Molly has been on Iams for 4 years and loves it. Steady weight, bags of energy (3x1hr walks a day, and she's the one running circles around everyone else). She is never itchy, has a lovely coat and exceptionally clean teeth according to the vet. She also attacks it with relish, has never been bored. There is a lot of snobbery about pet food, to which this site just contributes in my view. She also loved the orijien, and I like the look of the ingredients. Will it be worth paying triple the price for? I have my doubts.

cannot reccomend this food at all. I normally feed my dog autarky, but due to travel issues I couldn't get a bag as it is twice the price locally as what I pay from where I get it from, so I tried this food after being advised to try it by a friend... bad baaad idea. My dog had been on it for about two weeks when I noticed his is were bright red and REALLY sore, so I took him to the vets and they gave him a steriod injection and some steroid tablets to give him at home along with asking me to keep an eye on him to see if the symptoms came back as the steroids dose lessend, as expected it did and the vet suggested that I take him off the food, which I planned on doing anyway... a week later his ears had cleared up and stopped itching. since trying this food any feed with wheat or unnamed cereals (which will contain wheat) set his ears off. before this he had been fine with other brands with wheat in (he had been on another brand before the autarky) but now he isn't.since having this issue with the food I've heard of a lot of people complaining that their dogs have gotten sick/ had kidney failure/ had allergic reactions to the ingredients... plus it is REALLY expensive for the quality of food

i have herd alote of bad things about iams such as long use coursing liver problems and such :/ don't think i would trust it for ether my dog or cat

My cockapoo loves these, I break a couple down into smaller bits and she enjoys them as an evening snack.

My dog, a very fussy eater, steals my neighbour's dog's food when she visits their house. He is fed Iams and looks very well on it though they also give him all sorts of other things.
I am going to give it a try as my dog really loves it and eats twice as much as she would eat of Eden etc and I need her to gain weight if possible. I have never had a problem, in 30 years of dog ownership, with feeding wheat or maize. I am a bit concerned about the digest but will wait and see how she is.
