Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Before my frenchie was on royal canin and never had a problem with glands
Now we must go every months to vet empty glands
She was suffer with dirty ears they now nice and clean but this glands is an issue

The FEDIAF recommended minimum for puppies is 1.1mg per 100g dry matter (11mg per Kg) and the maximum is 2.8mg per 100g dry matter (28mg per Kg). We are in the process of switching to chelated minerals across the range, which will require a lower level of additive to achieve the same level in the finished product. I've been feeding Akela for 9+years and it's the only food that doesn't upset sensitive puppies and older dogs alike. I someone feed a little raw. I'd recommend this food to anyone who owns a dog's especially those with sensitive dogs perfect with no added extras or fillers unlike many of the major manufacturers

We've recently switched from raw to Akela. Since switching my dog has had really soft poos, but I didn't think much of it at first as I thought it was just part of transitioning. But it's been almost a month and if anything his poos are getting softer! We've not changed anything else in his diet, and we're not giving him more treats that usual - has anyone else had this issue, and if so how long did it take to settle?

Just noticed that Akela Original has a similar nutritional analysis as the Orijen small breed. Got some to try with our toy poodle. I want to use rotational feeding as he gets bored of food after a few weeks and also like the idea of not sticking to one brand in case of recalls or non-availability.

We have been feeding akela for years and the last few months our dogs are all itching, we have ruled everything out and spoke to a guy at there stand at crufts, unhelpful guy who said feeding the original the dogs can build up a tolerance to it and suggested we changed flavour? Why is there no warning of this on the packaging ? My friend feeds duck and her dogs are also itching so I fail to see it's just one flavour ?

Chicken or polutry in general are common allergies for dogs so we would always recommend feeding an exclusion diet to rule out any allergies. Dogs can develop an intolerance to any ingredient.

My dog has had Akela for years, however just lately she is refusing to eat the duck one, even when mixed with other things, she doesn't seem to like the smell of it anymore? I've ordered her a trial bag of chicken to make sure she'll eat that still and if she does I think she's be sticking to chicken!

It turns out it was nothing to do with Akela, it was the idiot vets not doing their jobs properly, we ended up having to have her put to sleep because they played "lets guess the condition" and went through about 4 of 5 different health conditions without actually do tests to confirm any of them, they didn't do tests until it was too late.
Just to warn people, if your dog has hypothyroidism, please make sure your vets do a blood test to check their liver count, apparently these vets were incapable of realising that the thyroid medication was making her loose weight too fast and in turn this was causing an issue with her liver, she ended up with a nodule on her live, her liver had fat on it and was hardened. They guessed at UTI, stomach upset for which one of the idiots who was actually the clinical director gave her something with paracetamol in it and told us to giver he paracetamol, womb infection, IBS and IBD. The condition could have been managed if they had listened to start with and dropped her medication. They accused our dog of being fussy with her food, she was NEVER ever fussy with it, she was in pain. They caused her a lot of unnecessary stress, the poor dog already suffered from fairly bad anxiety. They claimed it was uncommon but not unheard of, funny thing is, I was watching a YT video where a dog had the same condition and his vets are keeping an eye on his liver enzymes.. uncommon my foot.
Pardon the rant, but this has had a big impact on my health.

Original has had a 10% jump in price with zero warning to existing customers. Would have been nice to have had a heads-up, seeing as we've used Akela for years. They've now pushed the price higher than a better quality competitor, so it's time we switched.

Hi, The 10% price rise is the difference between a 10 kg bag to a 13 kg bag and not a proper price rise. We had to introduce temporary 13 kg bags while waiting for new bags to arrive from the printers. When we did have to raise the prices in November to cover our basic costs. The current price of living and bird flu has affected us all. We did email all of our customers a month before the rise to give customers a chance to stock up before the rise. We are still VAT free so are prices are as low as we can make then and we still offer free delivery on orders over £40.

This is a great food. My dog has been getting on with it very well and has a sensitive stomach. He's been on it for the last 3 years.
The prices has gone up and when I looked at one point, it appeared that it jumped by £10. But now that has been updated and you're paying for a bigger bag more and the over cost isn't too much of a jump. However, this has made me to start looking elsewhere. Not sure at the moment whether will stay with Akela.

Absolutely love akela kibble. We was quick to change our pup pretty soon after we got her home. Shes loved it since day 1(she's now 3) . We never have a day she doesn't want her dinner. The healthy treats for her and the cat go down well when we get our delivery and have recently been getting the veal ears and antlers which have also been a big hit and great quality!

Superb dog food. I breed a litter a year. Our litters and mum are always keen to eat Akela kibble and will eat it when they have been on human meat. A 10kg bag lasts about a month for a 20kg dog if fed exclusively. I know my dogs and puppies are getting a comprehensive food they love from a friendly British company.

I agree with Jake Reynolds...we usual order 3 bags at a time, five times a year (18 bags) and this increase means we would be paying another £44.95 a year. That's a bag of food!!

From all my research, I'm down to Acana (better score than Akela and works out cheaper because you feed less, plus you can buy it from Amazon Prime - next day delivery, so no delivery charge added like Akela's £4 min) and Orijen (best score on here, but more expensive than Akela).

Used Akela for years, but yet again they've increased their prices with no prior warning for existing customers. Now £42 for 10kg. I get prices go up, but a courtesy email goes a long way. Done with them. Time for me to move on to a better brand.

I tried this food after seeing its perfect rating on here but it is so rich it actually made my dogs really poorly. These reviews are based on an algorithm rather than real life circumstances so readers need to exercise common sense and caution. Went straight back to my 3.4 rated food and dogs are all doing well.

Hello! I have been sent to the website by the trainer from my puppy training class today and have done some research on the food my puppy is currently on and I was quite shocked! She is a Malamute x Springer and in her breeder home was raised on raw food, goat's milk and Skinner's kibble and unfortunately we found that the practicalities of that mix didn't work for us. I have read some reviews and done some research and Akela's really does seem to the best of the bunch so have ordered some sample packs and some treatos today and am excited to see how she gets on. Even better I notice the food is for dog's of all ages and has added Glucosamine and Chondroitan which our 9yo Border Collie is currently on as both his hips have been replaced, so Akela's could potentially work for him as well!!

Our Pomeranian (11months) eats currently the Scottish Salmon small kibbles, but since few weeks he became a picky eater and we need to reduce his portion to mix with chicken breast boiled. Do you suggest to change from salmon to chicken? or your wet food?

our golden retriever is now a year old & doing well on Akela original 80/20 medium paws.
3 questions though:
- when should we move to big paws (he’s 31kg)
- he keeps eating soil in garden & out & about - someone suggested rather than teenage behaviour that he might not be getting enough iron-wondered what your view is?
- at what point does he stop being a puppy & we reduce food to adult portions?

Hi guys I have a 4 month old French bulldog pup we had him on royal canin thinking it was great but he's stools was loose. His bum stunk as he let rip alot on this soon as we changed his poo got darker alot less smelly and he is thriving on this. His coat is like silk. Its the best I belive!
The price is good and food quality is second to none! I also believe they suggest the salmon for puppies as its high in omega 3 I believe and it has more key nutrients that puppies need but it's also okay for older dogs too I wouldn't use any other food now and I'm a true loyal akela fan and customer thanks again

I have a Cocker Spaniel pup. I am keen to get her on the best possible quality dry food. She is currently on Fishmongers Finest which has really helped her sensitive tummy. She seems to enjoy the fishy flavour too, so was considering trying your Scottish Salmon flavour.
I notice your food is branded as a working dog food, my pup is a pet rather than a working dog. Will she be okay on your food?

Not sure if this is of any help (every dog is different!) but we had a similar issue.
Our pack are raw fed for breakfast but we decided to start giving them Akela for the evening meal last year to help with tooth hygiene. They have always been funny about eating kibble so we melted a tiny bit of coconut oil (about a half to a quarter teaspoon when melted) and drizzle it over the top once a day which seemed to encourage them to scoff it and gives them even shinier coats.
We made sure to reduce the amount of kibble by a few grams each because of the extra fat content from the oil.

Our Cavapoo is recovering from a very serious bout of HGE. We had previously been feeding her Akela wet food, rotating the flavours which she loved. I recommend this food, I used to buy it for my Collie, did a lot of research into his food as he got older and this was one of the best, he had no problems on this food and the customer support is really good. The only time I've had an issue is with the delivery company, not the actual dog food company. I'd give the food a 10/10.

When I asked tails about it they said it was normal as he is a puppy...

I have a pack of 5 dogs, all differing ages and breeds (mainly Klee Kai and husky).
Everyone is fine bar one, who had an allergy to something. It brings on runny eyes but also a horrific cough. She doesn’t have it for raw food but we can’t do that constantly.
We tried grain free, but it’s still cropping up. Any suggestion?

Hello, looking for advice please, our German shepherd is now 6 months old and came to us at 13 weeks on Royal Canin Maxi plus, this gives him loose stools so was advised to try natural instinct raw complete which has helped with stools but is extremely expensive. We would like to go back to dried food but are at a loss as to which food is going to be best for him and his stomach, our older shepherd had the same issues and even plain chicken would cause an upset tummy!!! Any advice welcome

I've been using Akela for my dogs and cats for a few years now. Get a cup and weigh the amount suggested, then mark the cup for easy use next time. Excellent food, perfect stools for both cats and dogs. Both cats and dogs have lovely coats and love the food. Highly recommend!

HiI really want to move my dogs over to a good quality dog food. I'm trying Akela but the puppy 1 yr JRT cross has terrible wind and the older dog has very loose stools - any advice? Should I persever? With the Pumpkin mix do I put it with their dry food.

Finding a suitable dog food for a dog with food and environmental allergies has been very challenging for me. I finally decided to take the plunge and order some Akela for my dog to try. He’s not a fussy dog ... will eat just about anything really so I wasn’t worried whether he would like it, but was concerned whether it would make him itch. I’ve only tried the Fish Feast flavour so far as he’s allergic to ingredients in the original and duck and he loves it, I’ve had to buy a slow feeder to slow him down and stop him inhaling the kibble! But best of all, his coat and skin are now getting into great condition. His allergies were diagnosed at 10 months old, he’s now 4.5 years old and he’s always had a dull coat with flaky skin, regardless of the food type (and he’s tried them all) but after only 3 months on Akela his skin is virtually clear and his fur is so soft. Even his dog groomer has commented on the change. So whilst I know an 80:20 food isn’t for every dog, if your dog has allergies and can eat the flavours they make, I’d recommend you take the plunge as I did and order some....you never know, it might just help soothe your dogs skin too.

We have a 10 week old Maltipoo pup weighing only 1kg. He came from the breeder on Wainwrights (Pets at home own brand). I wanted to give him the best possible food and I wanted to transition him onto Akela as this had the best ratings. No matter how little I gave him, it gave him diarrhoea. The only way I could stop it was to increase the wainwrights again, but now he didn't want to eat the wainwrights anymore and was eating well below his daily amount. So I added in some Akela wet food original, this got him to eat the kibble again, but again a minimum amount and he was licking off the wet food and spitting the kibble out. His poos were really irregular with all the changing and the fact that he wouldn't eat till he was starving. Skipping meals until he had to eat. So I went back to researching as I could see us going down the slippery dry/wet/leftovers food combination to try and get the kibble down, then I came across Butternut Box. It is a human grade homemade food combination, not something I was looking for originally, but it has been amazing. Obviously he loved it from day one, he was actually trembling with excitement as he wolfed it down, he was so keen to eat it he wolfed it down with the mixed in kibble, but after a few meals he was spitting out the kibble. This meant he wasn't getting his daily food again, so we skipped transitioning and just went fully onto Butternut Box. I can't tell you how happy I am with this. He LOVES the food, his stools are perfect and regular and now that he eats at the correct meal times I can accurately predict when he will poo. He was also itching his ears and back legs a lot which I thought was just a puppy thing, but this has stopped. I think this was the wainwrights as oppose to the Akela. I hope this helps anyone else that has found Akela too rich, I was at a loss for a couple of days. Butternut also give a discount on the first 2 weeks 50% I think.

Hi I have a 2year old Bloodhound, we have had constant issues with his stomach as a pup and now have had 3 boats this year, 2018, he's been tested for Addisons, Cushings, etc and all negative. Hi,
Our 6 month old golden retriever was fed raw food (Natural Instinct) by the breeder with a sprinkling of royal canin on top. We kept him on this for a month then changed the dry sprinkle to Akela Original.
A month ago over a period of 10 days we gradually transitioned over fully to Akela.
Ever since, his stools have been softer, smellier and larger (which we knew would happen with dried food) however, over the last fortnight, out of 3/4 poos per day 1 is always VERY soft, difficult to pick up and often have to clean his 'pants'.
He is otherwise in good shape, coat sleek, full of energy etc.
We have tried Pro-Max from vet and Yudigest Plus to help bind things but this hasn't fully resolved the situation.
We do not want to go back to raw food for a number of reasons.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello, inconsistent poos usually indicates overly slow digestion and as such there is some fermentation in the gut causing the sloppy poo. The other firmer poos are fine.As a rule, you don't mix kibble and raw so this was a bad move from your breeder.I would suggest that as your dog was weened onto raw he doesn't yet have the gut flora to effectively digest this food. It may take some time. It could also be an intolerance to the extreme dehydration of this food. Why not try a cold compressed complete which has more moisture?Overall, raw is the best imo and I think you should reconsider. I know it's a pain but does wonders for the dog

Hi. About 3 months ago we adopted a 6 year old dog. She was underweight, so I was trying to feed her a bit more. I fed her 50/50 Butternut freshly cooked and tails.com kibble. You can't see her ribs as much anymore, but we've been to the vets the other day and was advised she still needs to put more weight on. She's also got heart murmur and muscle atrophy. She is not a working dog and doesn't move that much, which is probably a result of spending her last 5 years in a shelter. Could you please advise if this food will be suitable for her and help with her muscle growth?

My 14 week old boxer loves Akela Fish Feast. We use the kibble as treats.
We follow the feeding quantity directions and he's putting on weight how he should.
The vet is very happy with his progress and this food is certainly aiding towards good health.

Our 4 1/2 year old Bichon Frise x Pomeranian bitch loves this food, she has the fish feast big paws which she prefers to the small kibble that we started her on (less effort for a full tummy), she has to crunch the big paws which will hopefully help keep her teeth healthy too. We feed her as a weight control because she is right on healthy weight and we don't want her to go over.We also buy the cat kibble for our 11 year old moggy, we feed her as a 6kg neutered & indoor weight control adult as she has been overweight since we adopted her at 4 years old, she is gradually losing weight now where she didn't on other foods we tried her on.

I am confident that the positive comments you receive are well deserved. However, my wife has doubts about the wisdom of moving our large 4 month Golden Retriever puppy onto a high protein diet when controlling growth/weight is so important. Maybe, she says, wait until puppy becomes an adult.
Can you assure us or refer us to sources that will reassure us that your high protein is fine?

I've had my pup on Akela from 8 weeks, she loves the duck, eats the original but isn't as keen and wouldn't touch the fish. Is that common as most dogs seem to love fish and is it OK for her to just eat the duck flavour?

My Shepsky has been on Akela now for nearly 4 years. I would never go back to other brands. This is the one food she has stuck with. Her coat is so soft and shiny and she has been able to put a nice bit of healthy weight on which we struggled with when she was younger as she was the runt of the litter plus a fussy eater.

Hi. Both my dogs have been on Akela now for a couple of years. One of my dogs is a Shih Tzu cross Bichon frise and weighs 6.2kg The second dog is Cavalier king charles cross Bichon frise. She is 500g over weight. I only give her 90g Akela per day. I have the medium paws. I noticed that she just swallows it and doesn't chew, she is a greedy dog and I feed in a anti gobble bowl.
Should I move her onto large paws so she will have to chew? Will the big paws be to big for my smaller dog?
Also which shall I feed with the less calories in. Currently she is on the fish.

Hi my 6 month old miniature labradoodle has been on Specific since he was about 10 weeks old, every time i try to change him onto something new or near the same ingredients he gets a runny tummy-at times hes had blood in his stools!

Hi, I have a 13yr old Border Terrier (Jack), currently being fed on Senior (10yr +) medium dog Royal Canin, which is a relatively recent change (from Skinners Duck Field & Trial, which he started going off).We will have a 4 month old pup (Hugo) soon & while researching food for Hugo, I came across Akela, which seems to be suitable for all ages. Thought having both pooches on the same food would be easier & am happy to buy them good quality food.Was wondering whether, as both dogs will have vastly different needs, whether this is a good idea? I take it as Akela is a 'working dog' food, whether it is fairly high on calories? This is partly why we changed Jack over to the Senior Royal Canin, as he was starting to 'fill out' a bit! Just a combination of being less active & eating the same. He is fine now, no weight issues.Also, Jack has some allergy issues (usually resulting in ear inflamations & constant paw licking!) & medication for the summer months - I thought the grain free formula of Akela may help?Cheers

Hi I have 2 gsd x husky dogs who are 6-7years old. The 7 year old has auto immune so is on a low dose of steroids daily. He has has a runny poo for 1 month until I moved him to wet grain free food to see if it eased his stomach which seemed to have worked. I'm now looking to change his food back to dry food and wondering if this would suit. Ie is this grain free and good for dogs with possible gastro issues

I'm in the States but would be interested to know if Akela is available here? Also, I don't have my puppy yet, but is there a puppy formula? I've looked at dry foods produced over here and either I wouldn't feed them due to the poor ingredients or they are out of reach financially or (worse yet) they have class action lawsuits against them due to dogs becoming ill or dying. (The latest one I know of has astronomical levels of lead in both dog and cat formulas.) Speaking of cats, is there a feline formula? Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

Like many people I'm thinking of changing my dogs diet and have drawn up a shortlist after researching the quality and affordability of a few select ethically produced dry feeds. I've sent off for several samples to try as Luis has always turned his nose up at dry food. Surprisingly the Akela samples arrived today after only ordering on Thursday evening. Anyway Luis simply wolfed down the Fish Feast samples, seriously, like I've never seen him attack his food, it was quite funny. To be honest from the list I have there isn't much to choose between them on paper, it's become quite a competitive market, so the final decision will be the old adage 'The proof of the pudding is in the eating' and if first impressions are anything to go by Akela will take some beating. Obviously will have to try him over a longer period but at least he loves the taste and the feed is well produced and great quality. Quality product, great, fast service so far and importantly, possibly one of the top selling points, affordable. :) My compliments to the entire team involved, couldn't be happier.

My three dogs have been on Akela for 8 months now and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Their coats have gone from a dull finish to super glossy. One of my dogs is a super fussy eater and he has never turned his nose up at Akela, he wolfs it down! I do alternate between flavours to keep his palette interested though 😊

are the costs per day correct at present? as on the first compare screen it told me £1.06 per day, for a 30k dog, now when I click on info it says for a 30kg dog you'd feed 1792g a day!! costing £6.81 a day for a 30kg dog!
I'm thinking it was supposed to be 179g a day???? anyone know?

nevermind I looked it up on the Akela website and it's closer to 300g per day feeding guidelines, so the calculator on this page has been completely misprogrammed, there is no way it is 1.7kg a day to feed! LOL.

I do dog Boarding and we get a lot of dogs and all of them like to tuck into Akela if they a chance.It is not raw meat but for a kibble dogs love it and they will beg for it over almost any other. It is extra palatable when soaked and warmed too.Obviously various tricks are used to get dogs to eat canned and dried foods that don't contain anything like the quality of ingredients or % of meat/fish that Akela does but I know they are getting a better quality meal.

Hi, looking at the ash content at 11% this seems very high based on the average being 5 to 8%. Reading up on high ash content it comes up with kidney & stone issues. Can anyone advise further on this?

I've just stumbled across this website.
We are just about to pick up our 8 week old Irish setter puppy. The breeder has recommended Royal Canin Maxi Junior. Is this because they are often given this, as I notice it has a very poor rating? We quickly changed our previous puppy setter off Royal Canin as he had a very sensitive digestion and the food did not agree with him. What would you recommend? Would you also recommend mixing in some Royal Canin first with your food?

Hello just wanted to say what a great product I have found Akela Original to be for my 2 Westies. I have a 10 month old who has been on it since weening and an 11 year old and both absolutely devour their food each and every time. I have had to play around with the feeding amounts as I found the eldest one to be putting on a little bit of weight at the beginning following the feeding guidelines so I reduced it by 10 grams a day and she is now at perfect weight. Their stools are dark, solid and regular. Coats are glossy and they never seem to scratch or itch which is saying something for skin problem prone Westies. I bought 3 x 10kg bags a few months ago so had a slight discount on the grouped order and have now worked out that it it costing me £0.76p a day to feed both dogs which I think is an absolute bargain for the quality you get. 2 happy, healthy dogs and 1 happy owner, thank you!

I have fed Amber Akela small paws for the last 2 years (she is now 3) always enjoyed it but over the last month seems to be less interested and only eating 50-70% of her kibble a day (weight stable when she was last checked. She is a 10kg cockapoo who is active for 1-1/2 hours per day and has been neutered. She has 116g of feed a day in 2 feeds but again not always having all of that. I have rotated all 3 varieties to try to stop her getting bored. Do I just persist with kibble or do a combination with wet?

It might be worth trying the wet. You could also use csj herb gravy with it to spice it up or Wainwright's Sprinkle Treats. The sprinkle treats look like a spice bottle and worked with my dog. I haven't tried the gravy personally but everyone online raves about it. You could always try a sample of the medium paws to see if a different size kibble grabs her attention.

Hello, just wondering if there is a reason why the duck option has no pumpkin? My French bulldog puppy is currently on Eden as seems to like it but he has loose stools. I was advised to add pumpkin.. so thought buying a product that already has pumpkin in may help? any recomendations welcome. Also the duck is higher fiber content. would that affect the stools in anyway? regards

Hi, My Newfoundland is 9 and has been diagnosed with Megaesophagus. We grind up his dry food add water and roll it into meatballs. I need a vey high calorie - and most importantly - low mass food and I'm looking at Eden and Akela - it needs to smell great! Jessica....no...because it has Rosemary in it.... Epi dogs should not have anything with Rosemary or Rosemary extract in it. Try Aatu if you are looking for a dry kibble or Forthglade JUST range is you want to try wet food....

Thanks for posting Jessica. EPI dogs produce too few lipase enzymes (responsible for breaking down fats) to cope with the fats in their diet. For this reason, the traditional approach was to feed a low fat food but this is now in contention as several recent studies have shown that EPI dogs actually do better on diets with moderate or even high fat levels. This may be because the enzymes need a certain amount of fats to remain active or because many vitamins that dogs need to remain healthy can only be absorbed in the presence of fats. Other studies have also shown that fibre inhibits the action of lipase enzymes so most vets now recommend avoiding high fibre diets. Lastly, when dealing with any digestive problem, it is always best to look for a high quality, easily digestible food.You can use the 'nutrient level' filters in the dog food directory to find a list if foods that should fit the bill. Select moderate fat levels and moderate to low fibre. I'd also recommend looking for hypoallergenic foods as they should be easier on your GSD's digestion.https://www.allaboutdogfood...Getting the diet right with EPI dogs can be tricky as what works with one dog may not with another. Make sure you make any changes very gradually, mixing the foods for at least 10-14 days. Firm motions are the best indication that a food is agreeing with the dog. If you notice any significant loosening of the stools, it will either be because you are changing too quickly or because the food is not working so slow down, go back to what worked and start again more slowly or with a different food. Have been using the original 80/20 for 4 months now and my jrt and jrt x are doing really well on it , nice coats and in great shape .I do not feed the full amount as per the weight guide lines ( about 60 - 70 % of akela ) then top up with my homemade mix of a 50 % protein source like lean cooked chicken etc and 25 % rice and 25 % veggies . i do this as the bowls are fuller and the dogs are less hungry and it really suits them and there weight has remained stable and there not scavenging all the time as they feel satisfied
No skin issues and solid poops so works for me

Although it says for working dogs this is a very good food for all dogs. I have a small crossbreed (5kg) 2yrs old with similar proportions to a dachshund but a bit taller. When we first got her she was on Wainwrights Grain free which is a decent food but she was also fed all sorts of different crappy treats which led to her gaining weight. After she was diagnosed with food allergies I researched and switched to this. She is on the Fish Feast and is doing really well on it. Her weight is steady and she is nice and slim. I also only use 100% meat or fish treats which I believe has really helped keep her weight down as i constantly use them to train her.

I have a Newfoundland,a shepherded and a giant mix beed. All three would be classed as working dogs but the Newfie doesn't do much. Would this food be good for all of mine? Would I still need another different of kibble as well to try to prevent bloat? And is this good for cost condition. They are currently on royal canin giant and barking heads

The 'working' label is just to avoid VAT, it's fine for all dogs. Just feed an appropriate quantity for their activity level.

I'm interested in maybe trying this diet as my dog is healthy but unsatisfied with Origen and is scavenging a lot. Considering the high protein levels of this diet it is remarkably priced but can anyone comment on the satiety of the portion sizes? I also have some concerns regarding the higher than average ash levels which I usually avoid.

We switched from Eden to Akela Suffolk Duck about 4 months ago because our Staffy boy had loose stools and some weight/skin problems. Wanted to try a single meat kibble and avoid chicken and beef because we suspected that he might have an intolerance to them. He does well on the new kibble and has filled up and skin problems has cleared. He does still have soft stools sometimes so we add canned pumpkin to his meals (2 teaspoons per meal) and this seems to help. I would recommend trying Akela!

No, on the back it says the different amount to feed your dog depending how active it is, mine are toy poodles and not working dogs so they just need less of it... keeps their fur looking beautiful and glossy though :)

I have a 91/2 year old border collie cross who has always been a bit fussy about her food. She would only eat one brand for a couple of months, then go off it, so finding enough good quality food that she would eat was always a challenge. She has now, however, been on Akela for 18 months and still thoroughly enjoys it. She is full of energy and acts like a dog half her age, has a beautiful glossy coat and good poos. She loves the taste, and I love the lack of grain and other rubbish in the ingredients, plus the excellent customer service of the Suffolk Group.

I am horrified to find all the foods I buy for my dogs, because I thought they were good quality and value, contain Sodium Selenite. Which, according to this site, is toxic! I have recently had to have one of my dogs pts as he had developed a liver problem. I am now wondering if it was caused by these foods. High quality food! Moist kibble in a range of sizes at a brilliant price, delivered super fast. I love the ethos of this brand and their recipes. My Boston beefed out really great on this, he got so bulky with muscle and had lovely fur. He was an Adonis of Bostons! Sadly, his bum was a different matter and was a runny poo-er and killer fart-machine. I began adding fibre to his meals which helped make the poos go from wet to very soft. I picked up a bag of Harringtons when I ran out of Akela and he's doing the best poos of his life but also looks like he's been skipping the gym and using cheap conditioner. I love my little dog but washing his bum every day also means skipping the dog park so I am looking for another brand at the moment. He's up to date on worming tablets by the way.

I'm wondering how many calories per kg this dog food has. Also tried to find it on their homepage. It does have a portion calculator, but I couldn't find how much energy that amount of food has. The portion they count is 388g. Does anyone know this?

Excellent food. It has taken a long time to find a decent food that my collie cross will eat for some time without getting bored, and this fits the bill - she loves it and is thriving on it. I have not noticed any unpleasant smell from either the food or her breath. A real bonus, I feel, is that it is made from non-intensively farmed meat, something which all animal lovers surely find very important.

Could someone help me understand the financials - is it a false economy to buy mid-range food but feed more than higher priced food? I'm researching as we are about to adopt a 5 year old Collie and I want to give her the best we can afford. Was thinking a combination of Wainwright's Wet Lamb and Harrington's Dry Lamb - both reasonably priced but good quality. I suspect that I'll need to give her around 300g a day of the combined food (with raw veg on top of this), so how much would I need to give if using Akela instead?

All my dogs are great on this food and with the low carbs i recomend this food to my customers with less active dogs that are over weight. High quality ingrediants and no cheap bulking means you dont need to feed huge amounts so value for money is great. 5*

Amazing food. My pup is thriving on it. I buy the small paws version. She loves it. Shame not many places sell it. Only a few online. I will continue to buy it. Her stools have lessened too. Excellent food. Compare the price and ingredients to other premium foods. My lab was on Arden Grange but poo was soft and yellow (maize possibly?) but since being on Millie's has been brown, hard and easy to pick up! He is a happy, healthy boy and gets lots of compliments. Not had any problems with weight management. I do mix with Millie's Endurance 50/50 as this gives him a good range of meats rather than just one, which seems to work with him. They now do a higher fat food which may be better for working dogs (my lab isn't). All in all I am very happy and highly recommend.

I have a 11 month old GSD bitch.
She has always been a fussy eater since we got her. Breeder fed her raw mince ( chicken and beef) only with goats milk and water.
With us most of the time she refused to eat this.
I eventually moved over to Natures First raw complete meals and she was still very fussy continuing with at times refusing to eat, however would steal cats kibble and whiskas.
I started using a dry food with the raw products and she is fussy with this also, from Burns to Royal Canin.In the last month she was ill, vomiting and diahorrea from a bug she picked up, however although stools are improved not as healthy as they should be yet.
I am aware I have not helped matters changing food so much but when your large dog refuses to eat it is concerning. She weighs about 24kg and should be heavier.
Torn between your range and Markus muhle to bring a bit of stability to diet. What do you recommend?

The reason I do not use Akela is because I worry the calcium and phosphorous are too high. I e-mailed them and they said no need too worry as the research that showed too much calcium was bad was apparently done on food high in grain and that due to the high amounts of food being fed dogs were consuming too much calcium. So basically they said due to lower portions of Akela the high calcium and phosphorous would not be a problem. Sounds good but I cannot find anything online to back up what he says, actually I have spent probably a few hours searching and all I can find is that around 0.8-1.5% calcium is ideal, especially in large breeds and it does seem that well established companies like Eukanuba and Royal canin seem to have Calcium and phosphorous at right levels.

I found this food to be very reasonably priced but difficult to source as none of the shops stocked it and there seemed only one supplier online. Biggest issue I had is that it really smells vile and this translated to my dogs breath as well. So changed as I could stand the smell from the food.

Yes calcium to phosphorus ratio is at the upper limit for large breeds (1,5:1)
But a bigger problem is the amount of calcium on 1000kcal. It should be 3.5 grams of calcium per 1000kcal. Akela has 6,6g/1000kcal.

We got one lady RR as our first dog last year and research super premium foods, very extensively. We agreed on middle-up of price range. After few bags from different brands, we found Akela and that was the end searching. This year we got second pup and he was raised on Akela from 12 weeks. They eat the food without a miss, poop nicely and get praised for their coat all the time. Just the right food for the right money. Service of the Suffolk Group is excellent as well. Good quality food the best I can find for quailty ingrediants/price. My 9 week old staff puppy was under weight when I got her, 2 weeks on this food and she has filled out nicely and the quality of the poo's says it all, there less frequent and alot darker and denser.

Hi there, I have a 5 Months old puppy English Staffy Male, very healthy and very strong, was fed on Ekunuba Dry food which is great but clearly Akela is even better!! Hi have a 4 month old Shitzu who at the moment is on Fishmongers puppy food. However he is very hyper active and tends to be hungry all the time! He also eats his poo😠I have tried the pineapple in his food but he still eats it. Any ideas? He isn't allowed hugs freedom until end of November.

Hi, I have a 6 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier and have been feeding him Orijen puppy feed since we had him at 6 weeks old. He is in good health, but is extremely hyper active, he's either asleep, or running around as fast as he can! I'm guessing that this is partly down to the high protein content of the food but was wondering if there would be any benefit in swapping to Akela feed? We do exercise the dog regularly, 2 or 3 times a day for half an hour to 1 hour.

Hi Iain, I have a very happy healthy 13yr old staffy. I totally reccomend Akela!!! My staffy loves it and her coat, condition and muscle tone is amazing since I swapped her onto Akela. (They make excellent & healthy treats too!! I highly recommend the White Fish Jerky Allsorts!! Betty loves them!!)
She was quite a handful as a pup too, I think it is just a staffy thing... They do grow out of it though... They are really quite intelligent and need a lot of stimulation at that age to keep them from being bored. Just a walk/excercise won't always cut it... You need to excercise their little minds too!
Maybe try some games and extra training. At 6 months they will really take to learning something new. Maybe try teaching him some tricks?
This really worked for me and Betty when she was a bit hyper as a pup -and its really fun when they start to understand you... Start with some basic commands (sit, shake hands, etc) and when he starts being hyper and running about, get him to focus on the trick or training with a treat for a reward if he gets it right. I found that was the only thing that helped to settle my staffy pup. But remember to only reward him when he is focussed on you and the training...
If you can make it to some puppy classes on a weekly basis that will really help too, especially with the socialising aspect. Staffies are totally creatures of habit and routine so be careful not to encourage anything negative. I found the puppy training really helpful as it was more about teaching me than the pup! 😄 Good luck with him, you will never have a more loyal and loving friend! 😄

Hi, I have a 9 month old Saluki who is still growing in height (4cm this month). She was a stray and we took her five weeks ago. She weighs c.18kg but the vet said she needed to put on a kg or so. Since then she seems to have got thinner not fatter, maybe due to the growth spurt. I have always used Burns for my terriers and golden retriever and am quite happy with this. However this is my first sighthound. She has been eating Burns original puppy to date but I think I need to change to a higher fat/protein diet to get the weight on. I was therefore interested in your food BUT should I wait until she has completed growing as I read too high a protein diet might accelerate her growth too much and lead to weaker bones.

Hello there, I am feeding my 3 month old English Springer Spaniel "Chudleys Puppy Junior Pet Food" as this was recommended by the breeder. My springer will not be a working dog and on the Chudleys packaged its clearly says for all working dogs, which confused me a little bit as I don't assume any puppy or junior will be already used as a working dog. Anyway, I would like to change to the fish feast and was wondering if you guys think this is a good idea for a non-working springer spaniel? I still have around 5kg left, so would like to start mixing both foods together, just so he gets used to it and the change won't be from one day to the other. What would you recommend? thanks for your input.

Hi :) I've been feeding my dogs Akela for about 6 months now and they both look gloriously shiny and healthy. I really feel that this food has made a huge difference to my dogs, especially my black greyhound Fern. She used to have terrible dandruff and bald thighs but not anymore!! She gets really positive comments about her condition and coat almost every time we go to the park. She is sooooo shiny and her muscle definition is awesome!! My 13 yr old staffy Betty looks amazing too but has seemed to develop some strange eating habits.
She loves Akela! And I mean loves it! So much so that she wolfs it down now without even chewing!! I have tried moving her onto the Big Paws in the hope that the bigger kibble might force her to chew, but it's not really made any difference. She is a total Hoover! It's literally gone in seconds! She has never eaten like this before. She used to only eat a bit at a time (and chew it) and leave some in the bowl for later. She would only really eat if she was hungry. Even months after we adopted the greyhound she used to eat normally, but since we swapped over to Akela it seems she can't get enough and almost panic eats it.
She gets wormed and treated with Advocate regularly and I have taken her to the vet who ruled out any health problems. They said she is incredibly healthy for a 13yr old dog and it must just be that she is getting greedy and competitive with the new dog. But she has lived with other dogs before and I have been careful with her training at mealtimes. She was not like this at all for the first 6 months after we addopted Fern... It only started when we swapped to Akela...
She still has manners though, Fern leaves some of her dinner in her bowl sometimes but Betty never goes to eat out of Fern's bowl... I would have thought if it was a greed or competitive thing she would try to steal Fern's? Betty is definately the more dominant dog and Fern is too calm, lazy and laid back to be bossy.
Betty is not at all under weight, and I am feeding her the reccommended amount but I do think she might feel a bit hungry still. Or maybe she just really really likes it.... 😄
Could it be that she is used to feeling fuller from her old kibble that had loads of grain and potato/starch? I don't know. But I am worried that eating so fast might cause her problems in her old age? Any suggestions?

Hi,We have a 12 week old Spoodle - she has been fed on Royal Canin small breed puppy but the vet has told us she will be a medium (possibly 16kg) dog when fully grown and has suggested we use Royal Canin Paediatric Medium Junior/Puppy on 240g a day......they recommend Royal Canin VERY highly and suggest it is by far and away the best option....interestingly Royal Canin is the only food they sell (!) (This could be because they firmly believe in it or it could be a financial incentive)If we looked to use Akela instead, what would you recommend as the correct product, quantities etc.
We are a little price sensitive due to funds and R.C. seems expensive - but of course we want the best for our puppy who is a little underweight at the moment.Thank you.

Hi, I have a 9 week old English setter pup, he came to us on Burgess puppy food. He's itching a lot and I think it's his food that is causing it, so I want to change his food. Mr friend recommended taste of the wild food, but I can't find any reviews on it and it doesn't seem to have a particularly high meat content.
My pup looks pretty skinny, will he be able to put weight on on Akela with him being on smaller portions?

My lab x collie is suffering from repeated yeast infections, especially in her paws. She has had a course of antibiotics and topical steroids but I think cutting down on carbs might be helpful as suggested to me by a few doggie parents. She has a sensitive tummy but seems to be fine on the butchers simply gentle with a handful of laughing dog grain free kibble for breakfast but it doesn't seem to stop the itching and the horrible cheesy mouldy feet. I am also using apple cider vinegar in her water and on her paws, and washing them before bed but I want to find a food that can help too. Do you think this food would be a good one to try?

Our smooth haired Hungarian Vizsla is currently on Purina Pro Plan and is very healthy, happy and full of energy but I am keen to switch over to Akela to see if she is as healthy / happy as can be. Please can you recommend how long the transition should take and what quantities and percentages I should start with. Many thanks.

Hi! My 6 year old Border Collie has previously been on a raw meat diet as we had a few behaviour problems and my vet recommended cutting down on the carbs/grain/sugar. Will he transition well onto Akela 80:20 and will it offer him the same benefits of a raw food diet? Many thanks.

We've been feeding the original and now the fish feast to our labs. Really pleased with how they look, lovely shiny coats and firm poos, no gas.We're slowly swapping our new puppy over and her poo is definitely firmer than before.Really happy with the food

My 14 week old cockerpoo loves Akela, which is good as I ordered 10kg bag after reading these reviews. No expert as she is our first dog but her 2 poops a day are nice and firm and vet commented how good her coat is. Just recieved our free sample of fish feast, will try that tomorrow.

Hi, I am searching high and low for a good dog food for my 2.5yrs cocker spaniel- he was a rescue and has the height and body of a english springer spaniel so very large for a cocker but lovely and trim. We have been feeding him on simpsons 80/20 mixed for 2 years and he loves it however recently I have noticed his stools can be loose and he has dandruff. I think simpsons quality is great but I have been advised to maybe change his diet. I am also going to take him to another vet as he has always had bad breath and wondering if there's something going on in his insides as he teeth and gums are great. I have been advised to maybe change his diet so i've been looking into Akela. It does seem very similar to the simpsons though. Thank you

Reading on your site it only mentions working dogs - would your fish feast be suitable for a 4 month old pup who has sensitive tummy issues - vet put her on Specific but she doesn't really like it, your food came out top on here - she is a stocky, short legged, heavy Jack so looks as if she is fat but vet says she is fine and definitively not overweight for her build. She will not be a working dog just a family pet so want a food that will suit her lifestyle. Just want to give her the best she will eat. Thanks x

I've just changed my 4.5 month old chocolate Labrador puppy onto Akela Fish Feast from Arden Grange puppy food but his stools have gone really loose like liquid almost. I'm worried that the new food is not agreeing with him and I'm not sure what to do. Should I persevere with it or go back to his old food which he was ok on? The only reason why I changed is to get him on a better rated food but I'm not sure it agrees with him, maybe it's too rich in meat for him perhaps? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I just want to say how thrilled I am with the Aleka fish feast. Jasper my labradoodle puppy (13 weeks) has changed so much in just 2 weeks, coat is improving, poo's no longer wet and smelly and he has gained weight, although is actually eating less than he was on other puppy good. What can I say, I would recommend this to anyone wanting the best for their dog.

Elvis, my Old English Sheepdog aged 5 is currently on Pero gold with Pasta. He has always liked that and he is very healthy and has a lovely coat. It is a locally made product and I have been happy with it. However after researching on the all about dogs site it scores very low. As Elvis is getting older I am going to change to Akela. I have just ordered a 10kg bag and am just going to go for it!

Hi I have a 9 week old cockerpoo and the breeder was feeding him on Wainwrights puppy food so I have continued but it poo's are very runny and he will only eat it if its mixed with scrambled egg. I would like to give this product a try due to it's 5 star rating. Your comments would be appreciated.

Hi there,Also try feeding over 3-4 times a day in smaller quantities. Most people just feed twice a day but in puppies especially it's easier for them to digest in smaller batches.

I currently feed my St Bernard Puppy raw food, I am looking for an alternative which will provide the same nutritional benefits for roughly the same price. It currently costs about £2 per day to feed him. Akela seems to tick all the right boxes. I know plenty of people transition from kibble to raw, but not usually the other way! My pup is 4 months old and weighs about 32kg, how much should I feed him? Does anyone know how much is recommended to feed a 82kg adult dog?

Hello I have just got a gorgeous labradoodle puppy, he's been on bakers puppy food since weaning from his breeder and I want to change him to a better diet but there is so much choice out there. The Akela seems to be very popular, but my puppy is going to be big - massive paws - and having had a german shepherd in the past with bad hip displacia I'd like to do everything possible to give my new pup a good start, with the correct balance of nutrients - is this a good place to start?

Thanks Tim, Ive just started him on the Akela and am very happy with it so far, whilst I was waiting for the Akela to arrive I swopped him onto Nature's Way puppy food for a few days. I was so horrified about what was in the Bakers I stopped it immediately although I know that ideally you are supposed to change over slowly. The natures way is great but has a lot of rice in it and costs more than the Akela.

Really like this, it cleared up my dog's poop from runny to firm and helped with her anal gland problem, however I just can't afford it any longer. With postage the actual cost is nearer to £40, so I now feed her on something slightly lower rating but cheaper and all seems to be fine. Otherwise very pleased.

Hi , I am in the middle of rescuing a spanish mastin cross from Spain - she has leishmaniasis but not a bad case. She is currently having jabs from the vet and then will have all the correct paperwork and rabies jab before she comes to UK. I want to give her Akela food because after research I believe this to be the best. Would this be suitable for her ?

Firstly, God bless you for rescuing her and bless her too, hopefully any ulcers from the Leishmaniasis are not too sore or on her face? Surprises me to hear that was from Spain, normally find it in the poorer parts of the world, it's parasite infection from the bite of a sand fly I believe? Nice big dog though, do you know how old she is?

Leishmaniasis is absolutely rife on the Costa-del-Sol. There were 2 dogs originally, the mastin cross and a terrier type of dog, and they were inseparable best friends - but the terrier dog had to be put down when we had her tested - it was much too late for her. I think the mastin-cross now with her new name of Lady Canella is about 6 or 7 years old so it's important to me to make her last few years as lovely as possible. She is such a gentle soul but my friends say it's like trying to get a horse to the vet !

Well your giving Lady Canella the best possible start by just feeding her this great feed. I can tell you hand on heart it has transformed my pooches. Everywhere I go I get told how striking they both are and how soft their coats are. Their temperament is calm not hyperactive and Tilly (English Bull cross) muscle definition is amazing!I congratulate you in gaining a new family member and wish you both (and family) the best of health for the future :)

If the pup is already weaned then transition over slowly. 75%, 50%, 25% each week. The quicker you get the wee mite off that other rubbish the better. I would start with the small paws first though so your pup can chew and digest it properly.

For a staffy the normal kibble size will be fine. They have powerful jaws so will chew it no problem.

I am looking to change my dogs pet food , he was on pet food that was sold in the vets but he always seemed hungry and kept eating his poo , I changed to raw food but am struggling for space in the freezer , he is prone to ear infections and is constantly scratching , he's a shihtzu looking for good quality dog food ,.

I have a Shihtzu and an English Bull Terrier X and have been feeding both Akela for 5 months. Coat condition is excellent, energy and vibrancy also amazing. I can't rate this food high enough it has transformed my dogs.

Superb service and an excellent food both my dogs love this food my 4 year old cocka loves this also my cavalier puppy the only downside is the cavvy gets very soft poos thinking of taking him off it for a few months he is only 3.5 months old.

I have just been feeding this for a week now, mixing it within their existing food, and so far it is going down a treat. The dogs all seem to enjoy it, poops are still nice and solid through the transition, the small paws size kibble is perfect for toy breeds and I hope to start weaning a litter onto it shortly too, so I am hoping all will go well. So far so good!

I've been feeding my two dogs Akela for about week and a half now (with a few days of mixing it with their old food) and I have to say I am amazed that the benefits can be seen so quickly!
First of all, they love it! On the third day, they left behind all the old food I had mixed in and looked at me with "those eyes" for more! My 12yr old Staffy just seems brighter and has loads of energy but is not hyper, she can play fetch for hours and bounds around the park like a puppy again!
My newly adopted 3yr old greyhound had some skin problems and has been on supplements for weeks (which made a bit of a difference) but now within a week, her dandruff has all but cleared up and her coat is starting to shine! I can't reccommend this food enough! 5 stars +!

I have just bought the Akela small paws for my Chihuahua and he loves it. I would like to get both of my dogs on this food but my second dog is only 9 months old. I know it states from 12 months onwards. Is there a reason it would be unsuitable for her?

After my little terrier getting the shakes quite a few times, I researched bakers... Needless to say I went on the hunt for a quality dog food and she has been absolutely perfect since starting on Akela, bought a 10KG bag mid Feb and she's just about to finish so the pricing seems very good, especially as it stops her shakes and gas (thank the Lord!!)Definitely recommend Akela, just bought a 10KG bag of their 'small paws' food and looking forward to letting Jess loose on it - Also, their service is top drawer!

This might be a silly question for this site but can you reccommend the best dry cat food?
I have tried to find a website like this one for cats but to no avail...
My two indoor cats get a varied diet of fresh meat/fish, natures menu & purina gourmet wet food (one of them can't live without his gravy...) but I always have a bowl of dry food (science plan) out for them to snack on. After reading all the bad reviews (stories about kidney problems/ diabetes etc) on science plan and other "premium" dry cat foods, I am now worried that I am not doing the best thing for my boys... Does Akela Whole Prey have any feline equivalent?

Hi, I'm keen to start my 1 year old golden retriever on Akela, transferring from burns chicken & rice(supplemented in the short term with natures menu puches & skinners field & trial) as she is a bit too thin. However, I've ordered a sample at the start of week & it doesn't seem to have been shipped yet & I can't buy it anywhere locally. Will it be any quicker if I order via my pet shop?

Hi there, I'm trying to find the best complete dry dog food to suit both my 12 yr old Staffy and my recently adopted 3yr old ex-racing greyhound (both female). I moved over from Australia a few years ago and even the familiar products over here have different recipes to back home...
They are both very healthy and very active, the vet thinks my staffy has the condition of a 5 yr old! (I have always fed her quality food and given her plenty of excercise...) The greyhound still has a bit of dry flakey skin from kennel life. She is on supplements at the moment (biotin, cod liver oil and evening primrose oil) and she has fresh fish or sardines in spring water in the mornings. This has really helped but it's only been a few weeks so it still hasn't gone completely.
They are both on a combination of science plan, wellbeloved and barking heads senior (for the glucosamine) but I still have trouble getting the staffy to like the food that is best for her (hence the mixing). She used to love Hills Science Diet as it is known in Oz, but I have not found anything the same in the UK.
Just found this site and am keen to try them on akela! Tried to order a free sample but I can't see the option for free postage...

Hi, I have just started my 8 month old Border Collie on Akela and he loves it! I just wanted to know, is the actual food different between the 'standard' and 'small paws'? I ordered small paws because it says suitable for pups but pooch is used to much larger kibble (old food was Markus Muhule). If it is the same food I will get him the standard one next time.

I just received my free sample of Akela grain free, really pleased with it and so are my dogs. I always soak my kibble in warm water first and the Akela stayed practically the same size, normally my usual grain free kibble swells three times larger in the bowl! So I take this as a good sign that Akela has all good ingredients in it! I also love the small kibble as do both my Alaskan Malamutes which usually crunch up large breed kibble then spit it out! I think there both lazy eaters lol. Thanks again Akela WholePrey I'll be ordering a new batch of food very soon!

Hi Tina you can get the free sample delivered for free there's 2 options 2.99 and 0.00 don't know why lol just choose 0.00 and you will get it delivered for free. They only do the Adult food and a small paws food with smaller kibble that's due out at the end of this month for small breeds am not sure if it will be suitable for young pups you can email them.

Got the free sample on Monday and my pug isn't fussed on this kibble which am surprised about as she usually eats anything like any other pug. I halved the kibble in half still no joy early day's yet. Don't get me wrong she's eating it but after her own food which she eats first than runs in the kitchen now n again to grab a kibble. Maybe because the kibble smells of fish! and shes being fussy i luv it as its a top kibble lol so am waiting on the small paws kibble to come available soon and hopefully she takes to it. Or am on the search again lol

Just received a sample order from Akela (100g bag) - it was free with free postage and it arrived really quickly. I have been giving it to my dog as treats and she loves it! I am currently using Aatu and Barking Heads grain free but I think I'll give Akela a go because it's clearly high quality and it is actually quite a bit cheaper than the others (and I do like to change foods every now again). I'll be going for the small 1.5kg bags as I don't like the idea of a bag of food being open for a long time (10kg bag would last my dog 3+ months) but they are a really good price on the whole prey website(£5.99+£3.99 postage) so it's fine by me!

Akela is less expensive than Aatu. If I changed my dog from Aatu to Akela could I do that without the usual slow introduction of the new food mixed with old given both have similar composition? if both these foods are great quality, I would like the benefit of the lower price of Akela.

I have used Eden & Millies Woolfheart - both of which are excellent. Wanted to try Akela as well and my rather fussy Cocker Spaniel loves it! Instead of only eating when really hungry (because he turned his nose up at other foods) how finishes up his bowl straight away! Really pleased as I used to have to stand over him whilst he picked at his food because the other dogs (who would eat anything, Springer Spaniels are canine dustbins!) would have tucked in. Not any more, he loves it!.. Could do with a larger size bag though please.

5++ SO impressed!! I have 2 westies, one overweight neutered male (11 + kilos..!) and 7kilo female. They were fed the wainwrights grain free which is great food but neither were satisfied after a meal, literally they were constantly hungry. The male in particular liked to scavenge on a walk which led to a nasty stomach upset and a week of antibiotics after he ate something suspect on the common. Obviously increasing a fat dogs amount of food was not the answer so I got the free sample of this and oh boy!! Hoovered it up (believe it or not he has been fussy with dry food in the past) and didn't whine for any more. Full up at last! Hurrah!!

Very pleased with the service, communication and delivery. Gradually changing dogs diet so he's not having it totally yet but what he has eaten he loves!! Due to feeding him less of this it won't work out much more than his original food.

I have the fussiest skinny lurcher who had refused a lot of dried diets. I was very impressed with the look of Akela after finding it on this site and so decided to try it. I am so glad I did. My dog is now looking forward to mealtimes and waits by my feet like a cat rather than having to be coaxed to eat like before. The only down side is that I had thought I could get away with only giving this food to my fussy dog but my other two have brought down the plastic food tower where I keep the Akela food and helped themselves. I can see that I will have no alternative but to feed it to all three. It obviously smelt too good to them. I was also very impressed with the customer service of this company. I emailed them with all sorts of questions late one night about the product, not expecting a response til office hours, but got immediate, helpful response from them. I would recommend this product - very good value for what it is especially when you compare the price to it's close competitors. I also love the fact that the bag is resealable - very useful when you have food thieves like mine. I have since invested in a lockable metal cabinet to keep it in!

ordered 10kg of Akela based on nutrition content, feedback and price. They both really enjoy the food and there's no waste. Pleasent company to do business with.

Switched from Orijen to Akela recently and my 7 month rottweiler loves it.
Orijen was great for him but I feel he enjoys this more.
Akela is thinner disc shaped compared to the bigger round balls of Orijen.
Akela is also cheaper and UK made.
His poops are solid and small and his coat is shiny.
I'll be getting Akela for hopefully a long time.

Swapped my working cocker into it the day after she tried the free sample, an excellent marketing idea. Ordered three 10kg bags to maximise delivery. I Have been very impressed with the communication and speed that the company answer questions. Already recommended to many a friend.Already feel like I should defend Akela from the likes of Louise below. I have found the company to be very open and honest.
For people reading this its not only friends I recommend this too.

Akela whole prey have sent out an email to all customers / free sample requests saying if we write a review on the food on two sites we can have a 5% discount , find that slightly underhand and also states before posting negative comments to contact them first! So I do hope you got your monies worth sam, shameful way to boost reviews not a company I would now trust! dont know of any other company that does this? honest reviews are the way forward not paid ones.

Hi quest. Thanks for your concerns, however I would like to point out that I am far more concerned about my dogs welfare to worry about or need a 5 % discount. If price really worried me I would have stuck with my previous far cheaper food.
I would also add that I haven't received this email and still wrote my review. I wrote it without the need for an incentive and wrote it based purely on my honest findings of (in my opinion) a quality company providing excellent product and service, hoping that it would help other caring dog owners to make a good decision.Thanks for your input but I am happy with my choice.

Oh and to address your issues "guest" - How else would you like a new, up and coming British company to promote their product? Surely getting customers to post reviews is a great way to promote your business. Asking people to inform them about negative feedback is the only way a company can hope to rectify problems or mistakes.What's the alternative, poorly made food made by companies who spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on advertisement just to make you think that your buying decent food. Do you ever shop on eBay? The entire shop is based on individual reviews! I get fliers in with the goods I buy asking to leave a positive review. Some sellers will not even sell their goods to you without X amount of positive feedback. Reviews can literally make a sale just on their merit. When a company starts up its paramount for it to gain confidence with its future market. Using an incentive for its already happy consumer base to write a review is a nice bonus for them. Let's not forget what a lazy society we have become and most people can't be bothered to do anything unless their gaining something from it! There is no shameful goings on in this marketing ploy; they're not the 1st and they certainly will not be the last to use such initiative. Seriously boils my blood when people like you write such obnoxious and immature comments! Grow a pair and at least cement your comments with a name!Akela and all companies alike who adopt similar incentive methods, we applause you for giving a little back! I as a consumer do not feel I have been bought in any way and will leave my honest feedback whether I am gifted for my time or not! Let the minority bolster their ego's with negativity and the rest of us reap the rewards!

I have recently changed my 2 fussy Yorkies onto this food. I wanted a good nutritious dry food that they would enjoy eating and this seems to be ideal. The bag is very handy being completely resealable and delivery was swift and fuss free. Would highly recommend.

Just took delivery of my first 20kg. First impressions very nice, really does smell meaty! Kibble size is good and the bags seem sturdy enough. Took a day and a half to arrive so that is a nice turn around. I have an English Bull Terrier X American Bulldog (Tilly) and a Shit Zhu (Oscar). Both have just had their first meal and it didn't even touch the sides with Tilly. It was gone in 60 seconds! Oscar took a bit longer because of kibble size (small breed kibble please!) but he loved it just as much! All in all a very nicely priced top feed with all the benefits a dog needs! Thank you Akela!

I've moved all 5 of my dogs to Akela. It may not be the cheapest or the most expensive but the dogs like it. Some here seem to thing this is a platform to berate and bitch about the food having too much chicken and their dog doesn't do chicken? Well these a simple solution, move onto a dog food with no chicken? Alternatively try a BARF diet that way you know exactly what they're having.
This food is palatable to the dog, doesn't seem to have any of the nasty additives which some of the bigger names have such as ethyl glycol (yes some foods contain antifreeze) as a flavor enhancer? I've spent more on food and less. It's near to a natural diet, it's not fill of fillers which just tend to bulk out foods, even my 16 year old fussy eating dog loves it.
So in summary it's not the cheapest, not most expensive, it's palatable, full of Good stuff, less poop, hypo allergenic, no wheat gluten, which dogs cannot digest, it's British from a British company, and above all from a company with great customer service.
If you have the time to just bitch about the ingredients, company etc etc then you've really got too much time on your hands and need to get out there, take your dog on longer walks or just get a life! 😕

This is a small British company trying to better our dog lives; it's VAT free and they do still need to make a profit. If you managed to figure out a delivery charge so can the rest of us, we don't need to be patronised. Any dog food company that can better our pets lives deserves a pat on the back! Well it's simple don't feed this to them and stop being so down on a small business trying to make things better for the majority. Either that or change the dog! I'm really perturbed that your attack on this company or its food is so visceral and damming. Why? Have they upset you? Why don't you move on with your life and buy the food which suits your dog and comment on that rather than complain bitch and berate this food that many dogs seem to like, all 5 of mine do even a really fussy eater at 16 she loves it. Regardless of the cost if my dog likes it I buy it. It may not be the cheapest or the most expensive, however what cost do you put on your dogs happiness? Better to move on with your life

This product is only available for delivery which delivery costs an extra £4.99 Total cost is £39.98 you should advertise the real cost as its miss leading and the cost per day should be adjusted.

Recently bought for my patterdale/whippet cross and am very pleased so far. He was on Orijen puppy and the transition has been smooth. He seems to prefer the Akela as he would have been quite picky with the orijen. No digestive issues and the price difference is a real benefit. The only problem I have is stopping the cats from eating it :)
I'm a dog walker and can honestly say that the difference in stool size, smell and messiness of those dogs I know that are fed a lesser food is phenomenal. I would never feed Joe anything other than high quality, high protein food and this is really excellent value.
