Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

We recently switched to the Pooch and Mutt Health and Digestion dry food. Our 2 year old Golden Retriever had been suffering from an upset stomach for several weeks on her previous food, but her stools were firm within 48h of switching to this dry food.We honestly hadn’t expected this as we had tried several things and only freshly cooked chicken and rice had made any difference to her gut. She’s been eating P&M for several weeks now and she seems really happy - full of energy and a healthy gut. I’d recommend it.

I have been giving my frenchie pooch and mutt mixed wet food for the last 5 months or so because it was hypoallergenic. She loved it to start and I thought it smelled delicious too. However, in last two shipments the boxes I've opened smell rancid.. Literally like rotten chicken. My dog will avoid it like the plague obviously. I've complained through WhatsApp and they said they'd investigate and offered me a complimentary box. I asked for fish as I had no confidence in receiving another mixed box. The fish also stunk rotten. I advised this to them well over a week ago and I've had no reply. I've cancelled my subscription and am going to ask for a refund for the last 2 boxes via their WhatsApp contact again . It smells so bad, it makes people gag. There is definitely an issue in their production line.

This is interesting I have been a P&M subscriber for about 8 months and last week, my spaniel who normally has a bulletproof stomach got the runs badly.I noticed some of the pooch and mutt wet food, I think Turkey and Duck smelt really strange, almost like rotten eggs. My other dogs been up and down with his stomach so I stopped giving it him completely. I have noticed lately a lot of their food doesn’t smell as fresh as it used to, it used to smell almost like human grade food but it really knocks me sick now. So must have changed something on their production line! Not been happy with them as late so thinking of moving my dogs off it.

Was advised to put my young dog on this as she has been having on going anal gland issues, it has not helped and now she has vile wind and leaking glands again....looking for something else now....

My dog is currently on Akela but it seems a bit too rich for her, her stools vary from normal to half normal and half sloppy the sloppy bit is usually yellow in colour, wondering if this food would be any better for her with it having lower protein? How have other people's dogs gotten on with it?

Our 9 month old is currently being transitioned to this after being on vet digestive food after weeks of bad stools, sloppy, mucus and blood - vet diagnosed inflamed intestine/colitis. He was on wolfworthy (similar to Akela I think) prior to this. The vet food and medication settled this, but wanted him on something more nutritious longterm. He is getting on great so far, transitioning him slowly and his stool is getting even better the closer we get to 100% pooch and mutt - would give it a try, wish we had switched sooner.

My lurcher is a fussy mare but loves pooch and mutt healthy digestion. I give it to her with some chicken and sardines or mackerel. Good firm stools too

I bought this as you can get it locally in shops, my pup is 4 months and showing skin allergies we think to chicken. Trying this as fish based food i have ordered has not arrived. It is a little misleading but looking on there website and reading pack it is ok for puppies you just have to adjust the amount. It seems you need to feed a lot less, well it looks a lot less than her previous food?
I hope it will be enough and she will be satisfied as she is a very greedy pup.

Honestly I would switch her to butternut box or if not completely mix it in - this has been a life changer for my dogs and they also actually get satisfied from the meals because it’s good food!

I was looking at Butternut but I find them a tad expensive, especially now with the energy and food prices shooting right up, I'd love to give my dog their food but I don't think I could afford to do it long term and they worked out it would cost me over £70 per month. It's a shame really because they look really good.

My Girl had weight issues, we went on to butternut and she lost the desired weight so we kept her on it However due to cost of living we had to look at shavings and weaned her onto this over 7 days. That waa 6 weeks ago. She loves this stuff, however we are very strict and weigh exact portions every feed time. She is healthy weight is stable, she loves it too. the only difference that we have noticed is that poos are slightly bigger

On the Pooch & Mutt Website it says this food is 45% salmon but here it says 25%. Can you confirm this please?

Hi FP, I believe the 45% advertised on the P&M website refers to the total percentage of salmon ingredients: 25% freshly prepared salmon, 17% dried salmon, 1.5% salmon oil and 1.5% salmon gravy. I hope that helps
