Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
Information in italics is not usually avaialble on the ingredients list but has been provided to us by the manufacturer to help with our ratings.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

97 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique nutritional ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how healthy a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin: Germany
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

My fussy cavapoo loves the beef and duck dry raw but we have been left high and dry by Fresco who have been out of stock for months now with no information as to whether any new stocks are ever going to be available. Such a shame, as this seems to be a quality product - I am even willing to put up with soft poops as she enjoys it, but if I can’t get it I can’t feed it to her!

I have searched for a company that provides the very best ingredients purely for dogs, my dog is just as important as my children and i want the very best for them, this food is superb, it is full of goodness and no filler, the only thing i would suggest to buyers is to follow the feeding guidelines or you will end up with loose dog stools, it might appear to be a lot less than you are used to feeding but its so high quality with the best ingredients you don't need as much, my dog is a Border Collie who is working for 4 hours a day in all weather and she is thriving off this, i will not be going anywhere else for my Collies food now i have found FRESCO, and i just love the fact the proteins are not the usual ones you would get, for example she has had Camel, Goat and Horse this week, thank you FRESCO

I have to go against the grain here and say that we have had absolutely no issues with our little ' alfie' transitioning over to this food. I agree it would no doubt cause soft stools like any food should you not build up the diet change slowly however having spoken with the lovely girl at fresco and following her advice our dog has literally been given a new lease of life! Solid stools and a coat shinier than we have ever seen. Behavoir has also improved which I can only put down to the natural ingredients within the food. Is it a bit more expensive compared to most? Yes, however pound for pound and by following the correct feeding guidelines it actually lasts us a while, and personally the health benefits far out way the cost for us. I agree with the others on here regarding the fresco concept and it definitely filters through to their treat range aswell!

We are currently using. How did you get stools to firm up? We were told to start at 1.25% of dogs weight. Stools lose at the moment x

I use the Novel proteins only. This has been a godsend for my German shepherd. She gets half dry raw and half meat her poos are great. Some proteins are richer than others and people should bear this in mind. I say this because my dog has issues caused by food from brands you think are good that are expensive and really aren’t what they say they are. My dog is incredibly fussy and loves this

I agree with Keith and Lilly. Tried for fresco for about 8 weeks now and stools still very loose. The stools are also very thin and about 5 x longer than previously, or very small 'droplets'. I like the idea of Fresco and the marketing, but don't like the stools. Also don't like the amount of loose crumbs / broken up pieces in the bottom of the bag, which my two boys refuse to eat. Going to have to try something else.

Really interested in these comments as started my 13 month lab on Fresco. He loves it and devours the food but stool are worryingly soft, almost diarrhoea like. This is after being careful on transitioning. I will persevere for a couple of months and see, and have also reduced the amount of food in case too rich. Like Andrew, I like the concept and the nutritional value so will run a few more weeks…in himself, Milo is fine…

I have the same experience as others feeding fresco to my border terrier. Very loose stools - Have add pumpkin or something else to get normal poo. Seems the meat content is too high for some dogs maybe?

Our dog enjoyed this food and was on it for around 3 months but had loose stools the whole time she was on it and eventually started losing weight as a result. We swapped to another food and her poo firmed up immediately and we've managed to get her weight back on.

Our dog loved this food initially but after investing in 5kg of it, he slowly went off it. It is very hard and we had to soften it a bit with warm water to get him to eat it in the end, so we have now sadly decided to give up.
