Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

73.35 out of 100 - Good
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin:Germany
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

So pleased I’ve found this thread. Our two Staffies were absolutely fine over the last 3 years with Canagan’s Chicken dry food although both have developed the most abysmal wind! Like, clear the decks and open the patio doors wind despite the weather, absolutely foul! One has also experienced intermittent sickness, all over the last two months which seems to coincide with some of the changes as I’d also noticed a change in the product that felt much greasier than it has previously. Such a shame as they both enjoy the food although the wind is putrid and gurgling which can’t be good for them and def not good for the rest of the household either! Off to find another brand I go.Alan gsd •4 months ago
I have been feeding my 2 GSD's Symply for many years (they also make Canagan) I emailed them recentley asking if all their food was still made in the UK (got a thing about not feeding anything made in China) I was assured that Symply is made in the UK but that Cnagan was now made in Germary.Gilly Cant •5 months ago
After using Canagan on my 2 terriers (one with a very sensitive tummy) they have both bee brilliant until the last bag purchased 10 days ago. Within 48 hours of feeding, the terrier with sensitive tummy had severe colitis again, passing blood and mucus and within a day the other on was vomiting. such a huge change to the size and smell of the food, that there has definitely been a change to formula, even though Canagan are saying not, yet are advising to move dogs over onto the "new" food slowly, clearly meaning a change. They are completely negligent in not putting a warning on the bag that there has been a change. I have requested a refund for the bag I cannot now use and have asked how I make a formal complaint. There are so many dogs suffering and some owners with vet bills into the hundreds because of this. They must be held accountable!RobertH •5 months ago
Have a 7 month old boxer (Femail) and have brought her up on Royal Canin Boxer Puppy Kebble - Been advised by many people along with Nutritionist that it's a low quality product and not good for puppy growth - Thinking of switching brand looking at Canagan any views or suggestion welcomed.Lauren Selby •5 months ago
I switched my 3 year old working cocker to the chicken about 8 months ago, transitioned wonderfully and he seemed to be very happy on it, however since Christmas he started having the most horrendous gas, just constant and eye-watering! Alongside daily mushy poos. I switched to the lamb as my vet suggested it may be him having a reaction to the chicken and since then, he has been back to normal and not clearing every room he's in. Reading all the below comments, it seems it may not be a reaction to the chicken and something to do with the manufacturing process, I did notice there was a change in the size and colour but didn't think anything of it. If you were previously happy with the brand, I would suggest maybe changing to a different protein source in their range as that's what helped my boy!Natasha Baker •5 months ago
Been feeding Canagans for 6yrs now, has been great until recently. Our older dog is getting a gargling belly and refusing to eat. Our younger dog has a terrible smelling bottom. Both have been straining when going to the toilet. We only realised it might be the food when we changed and gave them a bag of fish Canagans for a month all these things went away. Now back on the normal chicken all above issues seem to be back. It's made us look on all about dogs food and trust pilot. It looks like others are experiencing the same so we will be changing there food to a different brand.shota shareidze Natasha Baker •5 months ago
So nothing changed the food is still. Horrible and causing oroblems ? I am very confused I thought this was a good brandUnhappytummies •5 months ago
Thanks for posting these comments. We have two rescue dogs and the second only been with us a few weeks. I saw good reviews for this food and wanted to invest as our second rescue seems undernourished. We've had non stop gas and loose stools from him and more loose than usual from our older dog. I now understand that the manufacture has changed location, so will be looking for another brandRichard Southall •6 months ago
We have a Transylvanian Hound who is now 14 months old. We have been feeding him Canagan kibble for over 7 months as it was a recommend brand for his breed. We first started to notice some issues around Xmas with him becoming very smelly. We then discovered that others were having the same issue and that it coincided with a move of production of Canagan from the UK to Germany. We stuck with it to see if he became used to it but he didn't. Approx. 3\4 weeks ago he started to really struggle with his pooing and had diarrhoea and straining constantly. He then started to have blood in his stools and began losing weight rapidly (he lost 1.7 kg in one week!). The vet couldn’t identify the cause but treated him for gastro-intestinal problems. The weight loss\straining and bloody stools continued so we changed his food to a prescription diet (Hills z\d). The very next day his stools became normal, the bleeding stopped and no more straining. It is pretty obvious to us what the cause was. The vet bill stands at over £400 and I have a useless bag of very expensive kibble here now. We chose Canagan as a premium brand and didn’t expect to run into these kinds of issues. I've contacted Canagan and they have requested the bag\food back for testing. To be continued...Sorcha Richard Southall •6 months ago
My dog has been the same and after tonight is what made me do this research. He has had an upset tummy on/off over 10wks. He has been on Canagan the last 5yrs, no issues at all. Last bag the kibble is very dark, last bag it changed in size. Through all, it came back to the food, reading all these reviews, including those on Trustpilot confirms it sadly. My poor dog, no way he is getting another scoup of it, the bag is going in the bin, going to get straight onto Canagan Monday. No idea what food to feed him now. It doesnt matter the cost, just want good food for him.Catherine Rowe •6 months ago
Still not had any problems with my 2 JRTs on this however, the small breed kibble has massively grown in size recently soon won't be worth buying small breed if it gets any bigger. My 2 don't gave great teeth (hence I buy Dental Small Breed) and have trouble eating big kibble. Why do companies always do this - build a great product then trash it to preserve cash and still pretend to offer great customer service??? Fed up with Canagans banal responses to my emails looking for a alternative now.Beardiesmum •6 months ago
So pleased to find this discussion. Both my Bearded Collies have enjoyed Canagan Dental for many years, but just recently have had stomach issues. The 11 year old in particular has been sick often and has developed noxious wind. I noticed my latest bag looked greasier than previously and there are little white grains on the surface. Checked tonight and, sure enough, “made in Germanyâ€. I will get in touch with Canagan too.Jenjer18 •7 months ago
Has anyone found a decent alternative to Canagan? Both in terms of a food that is a good quality like this one, but additionally a company that is as ethical as Canagan? Really struggling to find one, but I don't want to risk Canagan with the amount of problems people have had since they changed their production location.Julie Spray Jenjer18 •7 months ago
Did you find an alternative to Canagan as we are are having the same problem with our fox red ,he just throws the German made food up.its smells very heavily of molasses….horribleHelsbels Julie Spray •7 months ago
My dog’s stomach is also very unsettled since we started on the new bag ( made in Germany) .Tommus Jenjer18 •7 months ago
Oh, have they changed their production location? No long ‘crafted in the yo’ as stated on the bag?? We feed canagan, I think their feeding guidelines are way out!!!Tommus Tommus •7 months ago
Uk that was meant to say, not yo!Bec88 Jenjer18 •6 months ago
I’m moving our lab to Websters dog food ingredients are very similar to CanaganAHT123 •8 months ago
We have used canagan dry chickens for 10yrs with our Norfolk Terriers. We also noticed the change recently to smaller, greasier kibble. Both dogs have had stomach issues and awful wind (!) since using the new kibble and I've been communicating with canagan. They asked for a 250g sample which I sent in and now await results. In the meantime we're weaning the older dog on to Tails senior dog food and he seems much better.Helsbels AHT123 •7 months ago
Same issues for my dogCatherine Rowe •9 months ago
Yes I noticed my last bag of Canagan was made in Germany. I have used Canagan dental small for breed for my JRTs for 5+ years now. Interested to hear Canagan say the ingredients are still sourced in the UK. The food smells totally different from how it always has. Very unappetising to my nose but the dogs still seem to love it and I have had no problems with them and we are half way down the bag. I'm suspicious as it smells horrible now, nothing like how it used to. How can that be if the ingredients are the same?Lassie •9 months ago
Has anyone had issues with country game? I have used this for ages along with salmon and grass fed lamb , the last bag of country game looked different as in size and texture of kibble, I wasn't concerned at first but my girl has had stomach issues since using this bag. I should add she has been on Canagan for over 2 years with no issues.Cindy Warne Lassie •9 months ago
Hi, had similar issues with ours, I called the company and was told now being produced in a German factory and not in UK!!! Said ingredients still sourced from UK. Had to look elsewhere to manufacture as UK factory demanded too high quantities and meant storing for too long. German factory accepting smaller runs. I understand that they are still establishing a stable process. Advised that tummy issues could be varying amount of salmon oil until stabilised. Quite reassured by explanation. However we bought some food today (salmon) and found a bag that said made in UK. Long date still. Most bags said made in Germany. . Hope that helps. It's printed on the back of the bag.Lassie Cindy Warne •9 months ago
Thank you Cindy for replying, that's very interesting and helpful. I will mention this to the pet shop that I buy from as they were not aware of any changes. Thanks again.Sadiesmum •one year ago
Does anyone know the calories per 100g of the salmon variety please it’s not on the bag.Natasha Blyton Sadiesmum •10 months ago
I'm not sure but I don't recommend the salmon one it's way to high in meat content and left my dog vomiting best to buy the chicken oneLaura Mynett •one year ago
Has anyone tried this brand with working dog breeds? We have an English Springer Spaniel. She wont eat her current food without wet so i wanted to try something new. She is currently on Royal Canin.Gonçalo Oliveira Laura Mynett •one year ago
I would change from Royal Canin as soon as possible, that food is terrible. The best is to feed raw but if you want to stick to kibble the best one is Orijen.Celina Lim Laura Mynett •one year ago
I have just started this brand (The Highland Feast flavour) on my dogs and they love it so much that they would ask for more. My dogs hate Royal Canin and it gave my dogs watery poop. However, mine are not working dogs. I did fed Diamond to my dogs, it’s supposed to be a working dog dry food option but they didn’t like it as much as this brand.AJFlower Laura Mynett •one year ago
I have fed Millies Wolfheart 50/50 since 2011 to two English Springer Spaniels after looking into all the foods on the market at that time, I alternate every three months the choice i.e. Endurance, Gundog, Lamb etc. They have always done well on this with good stools and healthy shiny coats. I also have a Mini Long Dachshund on the same for 4 years who had R.Canin for the first year, unsuccessfully she was not keen and I struggled to keep her on it, hence switch - never looked back.Natasha Blyton Laura Mynett •10 months ago
I have a cocker spaniel who is on canagan at the moment she's a working one and she weighs 10kg she had a sensitive stomach with all other foods but this one suits her perfectly and they do a wet food as wellBrett •2 years ago
I wouldn't go for this brand, as all of them contain numerous proteins. I would take a look at Aatu, as they only contain the proteins shown in the pictures on the bag.Marcos Wenzel •2 years ago
My Yorkshire is facing some stomach problems due to food allergy. I'm considering Canagan and Tribal as an option (both salmon). Any recommendation?Sarah Baker Marcos Wenzel •2 years ago
I have an eleven year old JRT with a lifetime history of colitis and recently issues with pancreatitis. She seems to have no problems with the Canigan small breed, chicken variety, and really enjoys eating it.Lesley Williams •2 years ago
We have 2 English Setters and we had problems with settling the youngest on a food that agreed with his stomach. Canagan seems to have done the trick, although we are finding that the 5 year old is getting quite chunky despite feeding him slightly less than the recommended dose (allowing for other snacks and titbits during the day). His coat is also quite rough. What do you recommend is the dose for a 40kg adult dog who has a lot of exercise.Sharon •3 years ago
My dog is very fussy with dry kibble and I'd like to make a home made topper of meat and veg (chicken or beef mince). My question is how much canagan should I swop out for topper? It is just to add a bit of taste and variety....Victoria •8 years ago
Recommended Canagan by a friend for our 1yo GSP.A fussy eater she would regularly leave her food or only eat if something was was added. Her stools were inconsistent as was her coat.
Since switching to Canagan stools are perfect, her coat is incredibly glossy and soft and she eats when fed. She is much calmer but still has plenty of energy on walks and when training. It's expensive, especially as we need to feed almost double the recommended quantity to keep her weight on but its worth every penny.
I only wish I'd discovered it sooner.

This is amazing food I was introduced to Canagan by Pets corner and I couldn't ask for more it has a good meat level and with sweet potato as the carbohydrate source means it has a low glycemic index which is great for dogs with diabetes. Because of the slow release of energy it means that my dogs don't have mad rushes and then long come downs like a kid that's had too many sweets. Canaan also has the holy Trinity of joint care with great amounts of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM.Selina •9 years ago
My now 1 year old Shih tzu kept getting bad tummies a couple of months back, so bought the Canagan free range chicken for small dogs and it's great. I know there's no wheat and it's clearly labelled. My dog doesn't itch as much and he no longer has runny stools. He was a little picky at first about this but now he wolfs it down in the mornings and evenings. I just had to write a review, since this helped my little furball.Nicki •9 years ago
My miniature schnauzer pup was initially being fed Purina by his breeder, which I was told was rubbish, I was recommended to put him on James Wellbeloved, but found out they were taken over by the same company who make Pedigree Chum and the ingredients were also poor. I decided to do some research on healthy dog foods and moved him slowly onto Orijen, but can't believe how costly this. I finally got there in the end with Canagan. Oscar loves it, plus it's grain free and cheaper than Orijen. Highly recommended :)Sue West •11 years ago
We own a non food orientated Beagle, unusual I know but this food she actually has got excited about. Coat is good, shape and energy levels excellent. Only tried chicken so far but it certainly agrees with her, I think helped by fact smaller quantity to eat and satisfiedCarol Sue West •10 years ago
I have a beagle to but he is a big boy and want to take some wieght off him. How much do you feed your beagal a day in this food? we are doing 160gm a day.Sue West Carol •10 years ago
65g morning and evening fed in Kong Wobbler she is 11.5kgCarol Sue West •10 years ago
oh ok, i feed 60g morning and night in a kong food ball. Are you feeding the light range or the normal. We are on the chicken as i think the others might be too rich for him as we have proved with Lamb. Other wise he is loving the food. But because he was on Arden grange light im a bit worried that the weight will creep on as this is not a light range
