General discussion / Re: Differentdog new prices.
« on: Feb 07, 2021, 09:49 »
I've read your posts with interest as I have moved back to Butternut Box after Different Dog's astronomic proposed price increase.

I was spending £110 a month with them to feed my large dog two of her three meals a day and was a loyal customer for 18 months.

Then in November they emailed to advise that they would be increasing their prices and reducing their packaging sizes, which would result in me receiving 8 extra packs per month (due to them doing away with the 1kg packs) and a price increase of over £70 a month!!

When I queried their decision to increase their food costs by 60% per kilo and use more packaging,  I received a fairly poor apology which said "we understand people's personal financial situation may change" and [this price increase] "may not be an option for some" and directed me to their shop "where you can purchase food on a one-off basis where the minimum order is £20 and can be used as a topper which may make this option more financially viable for you."

This suggestion that the issue was our inability to afford the increase rather than us being unwilling to swallow such an extortionate price hike led my husband to comment on one of their social media channels and this was followed up by a call from Alex, one of the Different Dog founders where she admitted that "historically prices for larger dogs were incorrectly capped above a certain volume of food" and that due to this error they had been losing money on subscriptions.

She said that the packs were being changed to plant based, compostable materials and that, although recyclable, their 1kg trays weren't compostable. I'm unsure whether she was saying they couldn't get compostable trays in the 1kg sizes but she said this would be reviewed.

She also said that my husband's suggestion of larger discounts for larger dogs was "very valid", she would discuss it with her partner and get back to us. She never has.

From reading your posts and checking back on their website it appears that they ARE now offering 1kg packs - again this has never been communicated to us.

I feel really let down by this, we have been made to feel that they don't want our custom. Luckily I previously subscribed to Butternut and was easily able to reinstate my subscription with no price increase. While I do prefer the cooking methods of Different Dog (batch cooked then packed rather than cooked in the plastic package), I am still confident of the quality of Butternut's food, their range is better since the addition of pork and fish and I am not made to feel a less important/desirable customer because I have a large breed dog.

Ah yes, that worked, thank you, I hadn't even thought of doing that.
Just tried it with the duck recipe and it scores 88%.

Hi Dottie, how very odd! I copied and pasted the ingredients list for all three varieties into the review generator and each time it came up as 36%. Which I completely did not understand as the ingredients looked good to me.
Not sure if just a glitch on my phone?

Walker and Drake cold pressed. https://walkeranddrake.com/

Quite surprised that this food only scores 36% on the review generator tool. It has no red ingredients so does anyone know why this would be?

Just wanted to let everyone know that Different Dog have just launched a pheasant recipe.
I would also like to add that Butternut Box recently released their long awaited fish recipe a few weeks ago (not sure if this has been covered already as I haven't been on here in a while).

I have been feeding Different Dog since June and my girl loves it. I can't say I've noticed a difference in consistency but my dog is not a fussy eater.

I too fed Butternut Box but felt the company grew too big too quickly for its own good, it is disappointing that, over a year since fish and pork varieties were planned, they still haven't materialised.

I chose to move brands when Butternut were having supply issues and, month on month, the deliveries weren't the flavour varieties ordered, some deliveries just comprising of a single flavour. I like my dog to have as varied a diet as possible and I didn't feel the issue was particularly well handled so moved her to Different Dog.

I saw them at Dog Fest and they were cooking for dogs and very engaged and good to chat with whereas the Butternut stand were just trying to sign people up, no samples or anything and this was at a time when they were supposedly not taking on any more customers due to their supply problems.

Although my dog loved Butternut she seems to prefer DD and although I initially thought it would work out more expensive it actually works out cheaper.

Customer service is excellent and I like how varied their recipes are.

The consistency is much less fatty than the Butternut receipes and the packaging is also much better.

Tribal have just launched a new duck variety especially for small breeds:

Apparently they will soon also be launching 6 flavours of wet food.

Another suggestion for cooked fresh food would be Different Dog or Butternut Box. With Butternut you need to sign up for a subscription (though you can get referral discounts for your first box) but with Different Dog you can just buy what you need.
Hope your dog's op goes well.

Both Butternut Box and Different Dog are premade fresh, cooked diets which are nutrionally complete even for young dogs. They are expensive but at least you are assured your dog is getting the correct nutrients. Different Dog offer five protein sources in different recipes (beef, lamb, chicken, turkey and one recipe of white fish and salmon). Butternut Box currently offer beef, lamb, chicken and turkey with fish and pork to follow at some point (fish soon, pork not til next year apparently) though they don't vary the recipes like Different Dog do.

Thanks for the information, David, I really appreciate you looking into this and I'm glad to see the improvement in Tribal's rating.
