Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Hey there!
What prevents Millie’s Wolfheart Hunters Mix from being rated above 80% ? I am considering the switch from Wolfworthy to this food due to the higher protein content and better price!

Who knows how this site gets to its ratings? They seem somewhat arbitrary. Here you have a food that is 80% duck, salmon, Fish, lamb and rabbit plus some veg that is 74% - that's a lot of meat and decent variety of it including several types of fish. Something like Devoted Adult is only 40% meat plus added protein is at 81%. Why? Both are extruded kibble. Makes no sense to me.

I'm new to Millies' wolf heart food so I got two smaller packs of 700gms to try. I did a closer look at the ingredients and noticed Lovage Powder in the food. Now on checking the Lovage Powder I'm getting it toxic to dogs cats and horses. ? I'm thinking surely this isn't going to be in dog food if toxic. I need some help here!!!

Having been a customer of Millies Wolfheart for some time - I was shocked to find my most recent order of their Forager dog food riddled with maggots - more shocking still was the response I received from them when I requested a replacement for the contaminated food bags. They refused to replace and showed absolutely no concern for my dog who had eaten some of this contaminated food and had now been forced to eat an alternative brand whilst the issues was sorted, causing stomach upset! Definitely a company to avoid!

After disastrous results with eden and my dogs looking horrendous within only 1 week on it. I took the plunge and switched both my border terriers onto Millie's wolfheart 60/40 ranger mix. I cannot rate this food highly enough, my dogs look fabulous on it and the vets always comment on how good they look (the once a year they see them for boosters). I like the fact they have a choice to as not all dogs do well on an 80/20 ratio. Both dogs no longer eat every other dogs poo which they did on eden.

I did the reverse - switched from Millies to Eden, and my two Huskies are glowing.
But yes - its probably not for vegetarians.If you just switched to Wolfheart ... how do the vets "always comment on how good they look" (the once a year they see them)?

Please clarify what's the correct rating ? Says 5.0 out of 5 but there are only 4 user rating stars and when you click on the stars it says that 14 ppl rated as Excellent, 3 ppl rated as Good, 4 ppl rated as Average and 3 as Awful, so if this is correct then it can't be 5.0 out of 5. This is very misleading...

Am I alone in wishing that manufacturers did small samples of their foods? Our bichepoo has recently begun to constantly scratch and nibble at himself and I have been advised that it could be an allergy to his food ( Hills Science Plan, chicken). I would like to find a cereal free food that helps alleviate his itching but don't want to spend and then waste lots of money on a large bag which is then abandoned after a few days in order to try another brand.

There is no such thing as a "best" food for dogs. Each dog is different. What doesn't suit my dogs suits other folks dogs. I've heard and read excellent reviews on Millies Wolfheart dog food and am going to try it on my new rescue dog.

David, can you help me I am confused , you list 3 out of 14 of Millies Wolfheart foods I have been searching for a chicken free food its driven me mad I found them via here thank goodness for your site and was pleased to see they did lots of recipes I find the 80/20 far too rich for my BC and not enough energy. Why do you cover only 3 and place them as variety when they are all completely different ? and your prices are all wrong and ingredients too? Would you consider updating your information if I wasnt struggling to find something chicken and grains free I would have over looked them.. about to try their ranger mix. some of their recipes are actually 5* but you dont reflect this which is a shame as you do promote the 5* a lot, I think perhaps your too busy as theres so much to keep on top of which is understandable but would you add it to your list?. For some of us it would be very helpful if you could update your info, your calculator is fab but had to copy paste 11 to see what your rating were was a pain, will review our thoughts on ranger mix once it arrives and a few weeks in fingers and paws crossed here sorry to waffle keep up great work!

Our border collie pup came to us on a well known brand that I knew wasn't the best quality. Done some shopping around and decided on millies. Best decision we made, he is now one, good condition shiny coat and firm poos. He wolves down all his meals and we can switch between flavours for variety with no nasty side effects. Fab customer service, we live in scotland delivery always prompt and the one hour time slot saves you waiting about all day

Total Millies convert after trying Eden and Cannagan. One of mine is chicken intolerant so limited choice loose stools to the point of embarrassment when taking them out on Eden even after a three week introduction then they went completely off it anyway. Postage on top really pushed the price up as well. Tried Cannagan as i could buy this locally but limited to one flavour which they went off quickly quite expensive again and resented paying for the posh packaging. Tried Millies Salmon and veg but enthusiasm again dwindled towards the end of the bag-fussy pair mine. However, just ordered samples of Country and the new Obedience mix and they love both so they now have a wide choice. Both eat less than the recommended amount and with postage included it works out a very cheap high quality food. I have no problem with the potato content, both mine love veggies and will always eat it first if I add some. I like the herb mix included in Millies and the variety. They also do a very useful guide to energy levels which helps with selecting the appropriate mix of carbs and proteins. Some good info on the site as well.

Im sick of reading about eden on this forum at the end of the day every dogs different eden did not suit my border collie what with a really smelly rear end and the runs. That being said im sure eden suits other dogs,both products are very good but my dog suits millies. So please dont try and tell us or educate us on what you thinks best for our dogs i can read and make my own decisions on what i thinks best for my poochregards john

Can't praise Millies enough! My Husky was previously on Eden but continually had loose stools, I followed their advice of stating you don't feed as much as normal dog food because of it's pure content but my boy was on the minimum amount for his weight to feed as said by their feeding guidelines and still it continued. I persevered with it as they also said that it was a detox process of getting all the bad out of him, didn't know how much bad could of been in him like as I started feeding Eden at 10 weeks but I humoured it and carried on, they also said it may take some time to adjust he's now 10 months old and at 9 months he was still the same, so I switched to Millies at about 9 months of his age and I noticed a difference within days!! no more loose stools :-) which means I can now clean the back garden without a hose after he's been out and like I say he's 10 months now and he's doing brilliant on it, what's more noticeable is how shiny and soft his coat is now. So thank you Millies I can't recommend you enough.

WARNING: even though its grain free this food is VERY poor in comparison to Acana Regionals or Orijen, this food has huge amount of FILLER in potatoes 25%. Orijen has no potato in whatsoever and Acana very tiny amounts!!!! these 2 foods are by far the best on the market but are priced accordingly. I'd personally say Millies is not as good as TOTW also, there is also Eden in the UK which could be worth a try but many dogs don't tolerate it. People say with Eden its the high protein but thats not true as many including my dogs thrive on Orijen with high protein , maybe its the fish content? my dogs got very windy/smelly an runny poops on Eden so never worked for us. This site is great but anyone reading please take into account the amount of potato 'filler' in foods that are grain free!

After trying various dog foods for my Border collies, I've found that potatoes/sweet potatoes are the culprit for runny poo (for my dogs. Can't speak for anyone elses). It's just another cheap filler replacing rice/cereals/grains. I've now been feeding Orijen for a couple of years and find my dogs have more energy, poo is so perfect you could pick it up with sugar tongs!!! Good coats, lots of vitality.

It's a great food in my opinion. I used to feed my dog with mix of orijen regional red and lukullus. Wanted to find something more local and millie's wolfheart is a perfect answer. I feed my dog with countriside mix and so far all great, can't recommend enough (funny thing when neighbor's cat steals his food)

My puppy age eight months has now been eating Millies Riverside Mix for five weeks (he currently gets half the recommended amount of Millies and half the recommended amount of a raw food). This diet seems to suit him well. Im pleased with Millies and Ill definitely buy their dog food again. Their delivery method (one hour delivery slots) is very convenient for me.

I'm now a Millies Wolfheart convert after trying several other high quality foods. The review on here doesn't go into the different mixes offered by Millies, there's different meat/fish/vegetable ratios available so if you find 80/20 mixes too rich for your dog (as I did) there's plenty of other options to try. I initially bought a small bag of the Riverside mix (60/40) and can't praise it enough! My Border Collie was suffering from terrible runs whilst on 80/20 mixes from other brands, but after just one day on MIllies his poop had firmed up nicely, he was pooing less and no more atrocious farts! He's been on the Riverside mix for almost a week now and is so much happier. Poops are firm and don't smell and the shine is returning to his coat. I've placed another order with Millies for the Farmers mix (another 60/40) and also some of their training treats and sausages. Their service is excellent, with orders being processed and dispatched very quickly. I haven't spoken to anyone at Millies but have joined their Facebook group and the owner is always quick to respond to any questions and seems very helpful.

Been on millies now for around 6 months and recommend to everyone. And anyone who has tried it has stayed with it. Outstanding customer service, June nevers seems to take a long break from their facebook group, answering questions day and night! Very reliable and flexible deliveries using DPD to me in scotland, get a text message in advance with a 1 hour delivery slot.

yes i have to agree, my 6 month old pup is on the country mix, and after trying 3 different types of other dog food, this one is the only one she really loves and she has nice stools and no more bad poopie smells. The delivery is free and is very quick. It may cost a little more, but it works out cheaper in the long run as you don't need to give a much.

Excellent food for my lurcher & bedlington whippet. Had been using Eden for 18mths but have found Millies Countryside better. Firmer stools and coats much softer & shinier. Cats steal it when they can! Highly recommended quality grain -free food. Excellent next day timed delivery. 5* all round!

We tried Eden then Millie's for our Dalmatian. Runny poo with Eden, perfect with Millie single protein salmon. We reckon that the multiple protein is tougher on sensitive guts plus the higher protein in Eden is tougher for a Dalmatian as they don't have uricase so lower purine content is better. Local retired (horse) vet recommends single protein food for dogs...I dunno, but maybe he more likely to know than me. We will keep with Millie till they get too big a company and ruin the product by getting greedy ...so let's hope that never happens!

Initially my 60kg rottie was on royal canin, however after doing some thorough research I found out that royal canin is in fact rated poorly. I then tried Eden after seeing the reviews from which dog, although the reviews on this food are great, for some reason my dog did not sit well with it. Constantly getting the runs, lost weight, was in a much worse condition then when he was on royal canin. After Eden I tried Millies Wofheart countryside mix and instantly his stools were solid. He's slowly putting on a bit of weight again, I don't know how long it will be till he is 60kg again. I am feeding him 520grams a day, I will try and increase it slightly.

Brilliant high quality food , June and Mark give great support to customers my Rhodesian Ridgeback (2) and jackrussel (3) they're fed countryside though will be trying their new hunters mix nxt they both love this food and look fabulous on it ( good solid poo's always a bonus when you've a large breed ) , I have tried a couple other brands with similar quality but soft poos and disinterest in the food lead me to try others so very happy I found Millie's wolfheart on this which site it really is the best food for your dogs !

great food and service as always, the salmon was too rich for our boxer boy so we changed to country side flavour, we have firm poos all round and no funny tums, after a long battle with allergies his skin has started to improve, great support from the team also

I recommend Eden to everyone who will listen at my dog club, my 3 large breeds have done so well on it skin conditions cleared up, shiny coats, everyone remarks on it. We have some 25 dogs who have gone over with no problems apart from the ones who were fed Bakers, Beta or Wagg-the Arden grange converts or raw fed had no issues, I think that speaks for itself. have my cats on it too. less shedding which as a GSd owners is worth it for that alone. had a long time persuading a husky breeder to try it-she swore by bakers but saw the light last month, has weaned her litter of pups on it-and they are so good the vet has bought one....so the vet that tried to flog us Hills and Royal canin will leave with a puppy pack of Eden-I love karma......

There are comments from users of most of the foods. It's up to individuals to make their own decisions. I tried my pup on Eden because it was a five star rated food, but it certainly didn't seem to agree with her so not all foods are suited to all dogs

search for millies Facebook page, this is an open page and has lots of honest reviews, Millies customers including me do not use this site as we feel it is biased, and people use it as a route to persecute and bully people for their free opinion, so we stay away. I can tell you Millies is a fantastic food, my pup had constant diarrhoea and was constantly starving and losing weight on another food , as soon as i switched her to milies her tummy problems were cured within 24 hours and she is in the best shape, she is pure muscle. My vet always comments on how he hasn't seen a fitter dog.Hope this helps,

Orijen or Acana for the ultimate grain frees, I've tried many wanting to buy 'British' but compare the indgriendts and the amount of potato filler Millies is quite poor, you can tell in the mounds of poop its very starchy!

Millies suits my dogs very well. They are all healthy and enjoy eating it.
There is plenty of room in this country for more than one company to provide grain free food: Millies, Simpsons, Eden and others. Pick one, and give it a go making sure that you transfer from whatever you are feeding your dog at the moment VERY GRADUALLY.
If it does not suit your dog, don't force it. 6 months is far too long to be attempting to get a dog used to a new food. Go back to your original food for a while, then slowly try to change to another brand. You will find a recipe which your dog does well on - but it can take a bit of patience to find the right one sometimes.

Well it works out at 3 pounds & 33 pence (approx) per kg which is the same as Eden but of a lower grade meaning you will need to feed more of Millies so it still falls a good deal short of the Eden benchmark but its still a quality product in its own right none the less.

Well I'm sorry Superdog if I'm no allowed to voice my opinion. So explain to me how a product lower in protein requires less than one that of a product that
is higher in protein, with all due respect and from a biological point
of view that makes no sense whatsoever, I'm afraid my info is very much
"straight" thank you very much as even raw meat can have a protein content of
approx 45% to 50% when you extract the water content which is perfectly
in line with the biological requirement of any carnivore or is that too
high for you as well because if it is you know very little about the

I got thrown off your facebook group mate for trying to mention stuff/advice whys that? I put my 6 month old border collie/Samoyed cross on Eden about a month ago and almost from the start as Gavin mentions her poos became incredibly runny often diarrhoea like. I put a comment on the whichdogfood forum to that effect, and was subsequently contacted by Paul who I understand is one of Edens directors. He certainly seems to know his stuff and put forward a decent argument in support of trying to stay with the food, saying that it could take as long as 6 months for a dog to acclimatise to it. But what do you do when your dog has gone off eating it I said to him? His suggestion was to try mixing it with a different kibble I was feeding her on before swapping to Eden. So that's what I've decided to try. At least until the bag of Eden is finished. I'm mixing it 50/50 with some cheaper lamb and rice food which she seemed to be doing fine on before changing over to Eden. Almost immediately her poos have become much more normal in consistency, and her appetite has returned. Just to note that soon after starting the Eden, she had a greenish discharge from one of her eyes so I took her to my vet. Whilst there I mentioned the problem with her runny stools and he gave me some tablets for gastro enteritis, and Pro Flora powder to add to her food. Needless to say after there was no improvement after the course of tablets, the only thing I could put it down to was the Eden. I'm left wondering why if this 5 star rated food with its 80/20 makeup is so fantastic, why does it have this effect on so many dogs? I agree with what Paul (the Eden rep) had to say regarding the dogs are carnivores and so should be on a high meat diet, but surely not if it's going to give them upset tummies?

Hi Carol. I'm keeping an open mind about the merits of Eden. I'm trying what Paul suggested and feeding my dog on 50% Eden 50% Lamb and Rice. The difference in the consistency of her stools was almost immediate and they are now much more solid as opposed to the almost diarrhoea like stuff she was producing when she was on the pure Eden. I understand the ethics of how a high meat food ought to be the right choice for an animal which is essentially carnivorous, but I've read so many comments in forums from people who experienced similar problems. I'm not sure I buy this business that it can take 6 months for a dog to acclimatise to it. What else is someone who's determined to retain a customers business going to say? The jury is still very much out. There must be some reason why my dog went off eating Eden, and I can only feel that it was because she was fed up with the way it was playing havoc with her digestion. Paul might be a nutritionist, but I think the one thing Eden is really lacking in is fibre. Have you considered doing further experiments with the formula?

Paul its not the fibre, many people feed raw without veg just 80% meat, 10% bone 10%offal. I think its how its processed giving unnatural levels of proteins, with raw diets they have bone that firms them up

mine really smelt bad, people would leave the room if letting one go! hideous smell from poop also, have you tried millies countryside mix? no smells ever on this, never noticed one smell, also wainwright's do a grain free food not tried as stuck to whats suiting now

this isn't free advertising for eden. this comment page is for millie's wolfheart. this really isn't classy. not every wants to read about eden! it does not suit well every dog. we like to have more choices. why is it, that eden has the longest review on the site and if You try to find anything on different food choices people like You troll it with their comments on eden? get a life

Thrown off your facebook group for mentioning issues of runny poops! despite feeding less, no issues Millies brilliant food when i'm not feeding Nutriment raw, lets hope the post gets submitted so can see these links

eden gave my dogs the ability to s**t through the eye of a needle. Its superior to every other food in that one aspect only :-)

Eden does not set the benchmark for grain free , Orijen does, maybe here in England with British only food Eden does, it is hit and miss by the sounds, I really wanted it to work for me but it doesnt . Millies loaded with cheap potato filler at around 25% Eden is less than half of that, maybe its the amount of fish in Eden some can't tollerate

I have recently changed my dogs on to Millies Wolfheart Countryside Mix and so far I'm absolutely delighted with the results and even my 12 year old Pointer seems to have a spring in her step again! I've always struggled to get weight on my two younger Pointers (age 3), as they are so active, but I actually think that they are finally beginning to put on some weight. Stools are firm and reduced in amount too, which is a big plus. Great food that I highly recommend with excellent customer service as well and all three of my dogs love it.

Super food, after trial and error we've finally got our perfect food we swap successfully between salmon and veg and lamb,duck with rabbit variety with no side effects poop wise! Great flavour [I have had a taste its really good] my dogs are healthy and happy no fussy eaters with Millies and its wolfed down. Family run business shows with great customer service and support one of the top rated UK dog food companies from the Yorkshire Dales I can not rate them enough 5 stars from us! salmon can be testing for dogs, never tried millies salmon mix as this works perfect, best grain free produced from the Uk. tried many, orijen, eden etc, only feed this and taste of the wild now
