Hi Dorna,
The research carried out by the US Food & Drug association (FDA), are trying to apportion blame on Grain Free diets, along with pulses and peas, as "Most Likely"!
They site dogs eating a HIGH pea/plant based diet - clearly not a healthy diet for any dog!
They go on to "suggest" that HIGH levels of grain, pulses and peas are a contributing factor, with NO indication as to what they consider as a high level!
There is no hard evidence to support this theory and it seems like yet another attempt to smear the healthier grain free foods, by the high grain manufacturers supporting such research!
In Bentley's Taste of the Ocean (along with a number of other high quality products on this site) the combined total of these ingredients would NOT be classed as high percentage.
As an aside, we have one of our dogs with the same condition (diagnosed 5 years ago). She is on the usual prescribed drugs, cardalis, vetmedin and Furosemide. We also supplement with Taurine and L-Carnitine. Worth a look. Our girl is 14 and still bouncing around like a puppy!!
Good luck.
Regards, Geoff

I can not express enough how amazing this company is. From my first order the customer service has been amzing. Called me to discuss my pet and thier needs and gave advise on everything. Great knowledge, answered every question. I've been struggling with my labs anal gland, have to be emptied weekly by the vets.
After being on this food, he had them emptied once in last 8 weeks. His coat is better, his itchy skin, stools are healthier. I've even noticed his eye are whiter and brighter. Has more energy. I cannot thank this company and food enough.
Paying that little extra on food has saved me so much money at vets. With ointments, fibres suppluments, allergy tablets and anal gland appointment. Truly an amzing food

I have 3 dogs (5 months, and 1 year old Springbatts, and a 6 year old labradoodle). Very much loved family members
I arrived at Bentleys site through AllAboutDogFoods great rating of their British based dry food that is suitable for all stages of life. This is important to me as I want to ensure all of my dogs from 6 months to 6 years get the right nutrition for their stage of life. So far they are thriving!
I loved the personal phone call after my first order to ensure I was clear on measurements. I have fed the recommendation for their weight and age and it is spot on for them.
Now a firm repeat customer, I want to say I value their product quality, customer service and ease of business.
Even better is that I can purchase quality and support this British Based family run business. Thank you.

We have been using Bentley’s since about June time. Can’t fault the service from Bentley’s always on the end of the phone & have been so helpful getting the right mix for our dainty greyhound. She had loose stools & losing weight. But with their help, pumpkin & using their sensitive salmon food mixed with taste of the ocean she is now thriving. 100% customer service!

Following multiple visits to the vets last year with concerns about seasonal allergies in our now 4 year old Cockapoo, it was then mentioned about changing his diet to a fish based diet to see if this would help. His previous diet was chicken based kibble. Since starting this in mid December we have seen such a change. His skin is no longer red, the scratching is less.
The service from ordering to to delivery is really easy and quick. Plus the customer service is amazing. Highly recommend this food if your dog has allergies.
Thank you Bentleys

Hi there, 'working dog' food most of the time means VAT free, there is no difference in formula etc, it also states on its website 'for all breeds and life stages'. If your dog is not working (or exceptionally active), you may need to feed slightly less than what the feeding guidelines on the packaging may say, saving you money too!

Hi Emmle,
As Alana K has mentioned, it is suitable for all dogs - you would simply need to adjust your feeding quantities accordingly to suit their lifestyle. We are happy to go through this with you for your dog if you give us a call or an email (contact details can be found on our website).
Kind Regards,
Toby.

Hello,
Thanks for your message.
The food is suitable for all breeds, ages and sizes. As to how your dog takes to the food I would not be able to say without trying! We do offer small 75gm sample packs on our website, found in the drop down list when choosing which size bag you would like to order.
Having a dog that is not food motivated is not such a bad thing, as usually it means they are not so demanding and reliant on feeding routines and less likely to become overweight. With dogs that are this way - we recommend researching a food that you are happy with the quality of and sticking to it. Placing the bowl down for 15 minutes each feeding time and whatever food is left is saved for the next meal. Unless there is an underlying health condition, a dog will eat when they are hungry enough. Your pooch will soon learn that whatever they do not eat in that 15 minutes will be lost until the next meal.
If you have any further questions or would like specific feeding advice/guidelines then please do not hesitate to give us a call or email through our website.
Thanks,
Toby.

Hi
I have a tiny 11 week old chihuahua called Grace, she is so amazing and clever, I want to continue feeding her the best food and yours seems to be just that.
Currently I have her on butternut box which is really good but not great to use for training as I weigh her food out for the day and use instead of loads of extra treats.
She weighs only 1.8kg at the moment but weighing a little heavier every few days. I've been feeding her around 30g of mainly butternut but just a few bits of kibble for training.
She is tiny and will remain tiny so a little concerned after reading all the reveiws regarding the Size of the pieces.
Also I want her to have kibble mostly for healthier gums and teeth.
How do I purchase this food.
Please advise

Hi Annie,
Thanks for your message and I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Unfortunately we don't receive notifications from AADF regarding comments, so it's not every day that we pick them up.
The size of our kibble certainly should not be a cause for concern as time goes on. We have Chihuahuas ourselves, in fact if you head to our Facebook page you will see a video we posted recently of one of ours eating and crunching the kibble. However, in these early stage it may be easier crush the kibble a little, or banging a knife on each piece to break them in half. Due to her small size, you would not be feeding many pieces at all - so breaking them should not be too time consuming.
The amount you should feed will vary slightly from my recommendations. So always adjust this accordingly by monitoring her weight and shape, as well as the consistency of her stools. Generally, if stools become consistently loose - this would be commonly caused by overfeeding. At this time, I would recommend a starting point of 25gm per day, between 6-9 months you may need to slightly increase to 30gm per day. From 9 months, you would begin to slightly reduce back down to around 25gm per day.
If you would like any further advice, please give us a call on 01206 803905 or email us through our website.
Thanks,
Toby.

We have a 3 year old English Bulldog who was raw fed from 6 months of old as we believed it was the best for him. After him going off raw and issues with tear stains we looked for a dry food with the best nutritional value and chose Bentleys taste of the ocean. This is literally the best thing we have done, tear stains gone, his coat is shining and he loves it! Best thing we ever done was changed from Raw to Bentleys, simply amazing!

We have a 12 week old labrador puppy from working lines. His current weight is approx 8.2kg. The feeding guide on the back goes on expected adult weight. Given we expect to be around 30-35kg mark is, I correct in feeding him around 300gram/day currently and increasing to 400g/day as he approaches 6 month? Have transitioned very slowly over to this food over 4 weeks and been checked by vet but still having loose stools?

Hi Jonathan,
I tried to make contact as it would be a lot easier to discuss over the phone, but was not able to reach you.
Our feeding guidelines are put in place in accordance with FEDIAF regulations, so we are unable to modify them and make them more specific especially for puppies. From our experience, it is always better to start by feeding the lower end of what they recommend (or even less), as the food is very rich in nutrition, meaning it is easy to overfeed which would lead to loose stools.
I do believe there is room for you to lower your feeding quantities, by gradually reducing to around 250gm per day to see if that makes a difference. Ultimately, you know your dog better than we do - so by monitoring his weight/shape and the consistency of his stools, you should be able to use a little trial and error to find a balance that suits him best.
If you are noticing no difference after reducing quantities, please do get in touch with us and we can discuss the next courses of action.
Kind Regards,
Toby.

Hello,
Thanks for your enquiry.
Yes the food will be perfectly suitable. High fibre ingredients are the key to aiding in issues such as this, which our food contains many great options such as Carrot, Broccoli and Spinach. If your dog has persistent struggles with this issue then we would recommend further supplementing their diet with 2 teaspoons of canned pumpkin with their daily food intake.
If you have any other questions or would like more information, you can always call us on 01206 803905 or email info@bentleysdogfood.co.uk

Bought Bentleys for our 3month old Border Terrier Crumpet solely on the basis of reviews on here. She likes it a lot but finds the kibble too large for her as she's quite small. Fantastic customer service including a phone call to see if everything was going ok. I'll wait until she is slightly larger before trying again. Nice to see a small British company fighting the big boys and coming out very well.

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for your positive comments on our customer service.
The size of our kibble should not cause issues for any dog unless they have a severe lack of teeth, as we know many small breeds such as Chihuahuas that are crunching through our food day to day. We purposely designed our kibble to be on the larger side as it encourages the dog to crunch, which in turn aids in teeth cleaning and good oral hygiene.
In these circumstances, we would recommend a strict feeding process of leaving the bowl down for 15 minutes each meal time and whatever the dog does not eat is lifted until the next meal time. They are very fast learners and it won't take long for Crumpet to realise that if he doesn't in that 15 minute timeframe he will be hungry until the next meal.
There is no better time to try and persuade Crumpet on to our Taste of the Ocean, as a high Protein diet is essential for development at his age. If you would like any further assistance or advice then please do give us a call on 01206 803905 or email info@bentleysdogfood.co.uk.
Thanks again for your kind words.

Hi there
We originally Went for a Small 1.5 KG Taste of the Ocean Bag due to
its Brilliant Nutritional values and High protein levels to see if it
would be good Food for our puppy Vizsla and to see if he liked it or
Not...
However he is a puppy that literally scoffs food in an Instance and He
Loves your product and it has done wonders for him and his Growth.
He has had No Runny you know what's with it and combining it with the
old food 'Purina Beta Chicken' we are at the point where we are at 50
/ 50
As we only got a small bag we are obviously going through it rather
quickly but we do know that we only Need to feed him so much if your
Product compared with his old product.
Another Great reason to to get a large bag of this taste of the ocean
is that you and your Team Were on the phone to my wife to see what
food we had our Puppy Vizsla on to see if it would be a good match and
help advise us.
And Finally as you are the leading Dry food in the UK we could not
have chosen a better Product.
Thank you Very very Much so I will be ordering a Large 13.5KG bag from
yourselves.
Many Many Kind Regards Martin and Elise Norbury oh and Our Vizsla

Hi, I`m going to be transitioning our Lab onto adult food from mid October onwards & I was initially considering this food. Charlie our 11month old Lab is from working stock but he is not being "worked" by us as he`s our family pet. He`s currently on Aatu puppy food which is great & no concerns with his development etc. I`ve been put off with this food purely because it says that its recommended for working dogs. I just wondered if anyone could advise me please. I`m only swapping brands because the all about dog food website states that the Aatu does not give clear labelling. My doubt grows further as he shakes his head everyday as if his ears are bothering him. 2 vets on 2 different occasions have examined & no evidence or ear infection, redness, no odour but after reading head shaking can be a sign of allergy. Thanks in advance

Hi Julie,
Previous commentor Alana is correct, the term 'working dog' is a technical classification that means the food is exempt from VAT.
This enables us to keep our food priced as competitively as possible, allowing more dogs access to a premium quality diet.
The only difference is that if your dog is not working (or exceptionally active), you may need to feed slightly less than what the feeding guidelines on the packaging may say. This will also have a positive impact on your pocket too, feeding less food than you may expect!
Thanks,
Toby.

I researched the best nutrition for my rescue dog for my budget and tried a sample packet and she loved it. I was left a message by staff before purchasing a large bag of food letting me know how to transfer her over from her old food and instructions in the packet too. The only problem I have is she loves it so much that she pilfer through her bowl eating the Bentleys kibble and leaving the old food then begging for more she loves it so much! So we have taken to mashing it so her tummy adjusts until she is fully on Bentleys. 5* customer service. Better nutrition than some raw foods and "tailer made" food subscriptions and a very happy French bulldog. Thanks 😊

Patricia Ppi• 11 months ago
Hi Patricia,
Currently we only have one kibble size for Taste of the Ocean - which is by design.
It is possible to soften the kibble over time. Due to the quality of the ingredients in our kibble and low carbohydrates, it is difficult to soften the kibble as it absorbs little water and will not soften/swell like most other poorer quality dry foods. Whilst it would be laborious to do so, you may find it easier to crush the kibble but placing it in a bag and taking a hammer to it! At the very least the dog would still be receiving all of the high quality nutrients for a healthy diet.
Thanks,
Toby.

One of the ingredients is not picked up as part of "meat percentage". Krill meal is now listed as "Crustacean" which is accepted. Thus, the rating has been adjusted to 5*.

Suitable for all breeds of dogs
Private label (or white label) pet foods are pre-formulated recipes that companies can order from certain factories, add their own label or packaging and retail to the public as their own brand. They are therefore available from numerous suppliers. Click here for more info.
In general, unless your dog has health issues, you probably won't have to worry about these figures. Click here for more information
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.

Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin: United Kingdom
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

In regards to Dilated Cardiomyopathy… what’s regarding as high pea, lentil, sweet potatoes percentages?
Bentleys Dorna • 5 days ago
Hi Dorna,
The research carried out by the US Food & Drug association (FDA), are trying to apportion blame on Grain Free diets, along with pulses and peas, as "Most Likely"!

Hello,
Just wanted to see if anyone knows if this is safe for a non working dog? I can see on the label it's for working dogs but can't find if there's a feeding chart/info re feeding to non working dogs.
Alana K Emmie• 5 months ago
Hi there, 'working dog' food most of the time means VAT free, there is no difference in formula etc, it also states on its website 'for all breeds and life stages'. If your dog is not working (or exceptionally active), you may need to feed slightly less than what the feeding guidelines on the packaging may say, saving you money too!
Emmie Alana K• 5 months ago
That's awesome to hear! Thanks for the info Alana :)
Bentleys Emmie• 5 months ago
Hi Emmle,
As Alana K has mentioned, it is suitable for all dogs - you would simply need to adjust your feeding quantities accordingly to suit their lifestyle. We are happy to go through this with you for your dog if you give us a call or an email (contact details can be found on our website).
Kind Regards,
Toby.
Emzypo• 6 months ago
Would this be suitable for a very fussy 6kg cavapoochon, who is not food motivated.
Bentleys Emzypo• 6 months ago
Hello,
Thanks for your message.
Thanks,
Toby.
Annie Wilson• 6 months ago
Annie, Halesowen dog care.
Bentleys Annie Wilson• 6 months ago
Hi Annie,
Thanks for your message and I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Bentleys Jonathan Dickson• 9 months ago
Kind Regards,
Toby.

Would this be of any use for a 11 month old cockerpoo with anal sac issues ?
Bentleys Walkingwithdogs• 9 months ago
Hello,
Thanks for your enquiry.

Bentleys Jeremy Dearman• 11 months ago
Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for your positive comments on our customer service.

My 11 month old cockapoo has been on this since April this year and she’s had no skin, ear, coat issues at all. She has a lovely shiny coat. Many dogs can be allergic to ingredients especially chicken but I highly recommend Bentleys taste of the ocean!
Bentleys Julie Oates• 11 months ago
Hi Julie,
Previous commentor Alana is correct, the term 'working dog' is a technical classification that means the food is exempt from VAT.

Thanks 😊

Do you offer small kibble?
Bentleys Patricia Ppi• 11 months ago
Hi Patricia,
Currently we only have one kibble size for Taste of the Ocean - which is by design.
Thanks,
Toby.

All About Dog Food Jamie• 6 years ago
Hi Jamie and thanks for posting. Right now the meat percentage is a shade below the threshold for a perfect score but this is something we are looking into so it may well change in the near future
Geoff Jamie• 5 years ago
One of the ingredients is not picked up as part of "meat percentage". Krill meal is now listed as "Crustacean" which is accepted. Thus, the rating has been adjusted to 5*.
