Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

My dog loves this food, but unfortunately, my 2.5-year-old Golden Retriever didn't go well with Alpha Spirit 7 Days. He started randomly regurgitating small amounts of food, sometimes just liquids, throughout the day. I consulted the vet because it didn't start right away when we started with Alpha Spirit, we thought it was something that he ate and irritated his stomach. We made a treatment (which included changing his food for a stomach-sensitive type). Everything went fine and he stopped with everything. Getting back to Alpha Spirit, everything came back again. Then I stepped on this sentence: "The carbohydrates are not broken down much due to the lower heat to which they are exposed during production, so that many dogs do not tolerate cold-pressed dry food well."
I don't think has anything wrong with the food itself, my dog loves it. But I think he belongs to the sensible cold-pressed food group.

Hello,
I have two medium size dogs of mixed breed. They are both neutered. One is 10 years old and the other is 6 years old. Is this dog food suitable for them? Specially for the senior one? Or can you recommend a more suitable food? (maybe with more fiber and less protein?)

My dog really loves this food but I think he is allergic to it because he’s now developed itchy ears and a rash on the muzzle and on his tummy. Had him at the vet the medication they gave helps but the itch returns. Anyone else had similar issues with this food? Thanks

Yes! Same here. I have an English bull terrier and his ears were sore and itchy after! The spaniels loved it but taken them off it now due to this issue also.

Please can you review again & update the ‘mixing bowl’ pie chart as this now appears so different for each of the meat types in this range, although the meat remains at 85%. For example the Duck flavour now has 32% carb whereas the Poultry has 0% carb & 25.3% fruit & veg, but the core composition appears the same across ingredient lists. I bought the Duck flavour when the pie chart composition had very low carb & so concerned to see this at 32% now. Thank you so much as I very much value all the info your website & very helpful 😊.

Why is it that this food has gone down in ratings it was 83% but now its81% I have always thought it’s a really good brand and my pups look great eating it they love it the cold pressed duck and the fish

Definitely I thought so and really don’t want to change again I have 1 fussy eater but now eats a little more than usual and another that can’t wait to eat it . I was originally feeding them orijen but I was throwing more away than they was eating and came across this threw all about dog food and thought I would give it a try and they love it

BE CAREFUL! We were trying this and found a huge piece of plastic hidden within one of the pieces of kibble. I wish I could share the pictures. Awaiting a reply from customer services. Not happy!

Hi Christopher. I look after the wholesale side of the business but have just seen your post and was sorry to read of your experience. I have found that on occasions, elements of microplastic found within the food chain have found their way into the finished product. Particular if there is fish within the ingredients and there are small bits of plastic in the ocean. Ours is non extruded or cold pressed. The cooking processes mean that we do not heat to a sufficient temperature to melt it, whereby it would then merge with the rest of the ingredients. This is the process used with an extruded kibble. I think you may have been in contact with our customer service team but I am keen to help and understand more of your experience and learn from this so please give me a shout on 07885 963716. Having tried the complete variety which had chicken I wondered if that was contributing to her scratching so wanted one that was grain and chicken free.
Sadly this one hasn't helped.
Refused her breakfast this morning and has a gurgling tum.
Both varieties have given her really whiffy farts!
I did so want this variety to be suitable so am now reluctantly giving up with this brand, maybe its too rich for her Mollie is a 5kg mini poodle,
I can't afford to waste more money as this was expensive so thankful the first lot I tried was a free sample.
Don't know what to try next.
We have tried Gentle Foods, their Goat and the Fish varieties and some of Wilsons brand over the last 18 months and raw food from weaning but all had much the same effect after a while, except for the whiffiness.
Maybe cheaper rubbish food but I know poodles aren't the easiest to feed and i really dislike ha ging her food too often and do take it slow when doing so.

Once the bag is open, how long does it take to go off? Just deciding on what size bag to go for. I have already started my 2 dogs on this food and very happy with the low carb content. So far so good, they’ve enjoyed this more than any food we’ve ever had!

I contacted them before Christmas with this same question. They replied that it maintained it's "as new" for 15 days, but is good for the duration of it's best before date.
My bags last approx 35 days and my dogs love it.

Why do so many dry foods add chicken to the ingredients ..I was hopeful when I saw Duck, mine are fine with that but are intolerant of chicken (and eggs)

"In pet food, chicken can be used as a fresh meat (fresh chicken, deboned chicken, freshly prepared chicken) or as a pre-prepared, dry meat meal (chicken meal, dried chicken, dehydrated chicken). When the ingredient is listed simply as 'chicken' it usually refers to the fresh form.
Chicken is the most popular meat found in dog foods. It is highly palatable, relatively inexpensive and provides an excellent source of protein. For most dogs, chicken is very easy to digest but its widespread usage in dog foods has lead to a higher rate of intolerance to chicken than to any other meat so if your dog is particularly prone to dietary intolerance, chicken may not be the best choice.
As with all meats, the quality of the chicken used in pet foods can vary considerably so for more details on the chicken found in your dog's food, please contact the manufacturer directly."
The bag you selected for your dog contains duck as the primary protein source but there are other proteins in there including chicken that add other vitamin and mineral benefits to their diet. For a completely chicken free option then the Wild Fish contains 85% whole fish and no chicken at all.

I'm pretty sure a lot of brands use eggs to bind the ingredients together (like how eggs are used in cakes to hold everything together once cooked). The amount of eggs in the wild fish variety is extremely low - it only makes up 0.5% of the mix (source: I contacted Sabre Pet Foods a few months ago and asked for exact percentages of each ingredient). My dog is also extremely sensitive to chicken and hasn't had any issues with the wild fish variety. If you need a food that has absolutely no amount of chicken or eggs whatsoever, then in the dog food directory on AADF, you can filter those ingredients out and see which food you like best from the ones that come up.

Yes that is what I do its just so frustrating the amount of dog foods that add chicken and egg and you cant tell till you study the ingrdients.. I usually use a 65% beef or duck with superfoods that do not have chicken or eggs, was just looking for a change, unfortunately it wont be Alpha Spirit.

I periodically look for new dry foods and alpha spirit seemed a possible but the fish is the only one not including ingredients I exclude and fish contain so many pollutants now I keep it to a bare minimum in my dogs diet. I'm also wary of the large percentage of "other" in the ingredients chart!

Our food contain natural ingredients and are really high in protein which is great in principal but sometimes not right for all doggoes tummies.
