Should You Consider Feeding Raw?

While some people make their own raw dog diets, there are now convenient pre-prepared options available. Over the past decade, this method of feeding dogs has grown increasingly popular in the UK.

These complete raw foods come minced, freeze-dried nuggets, in frozen blocks, or chunks and offer the benefits of raw feeding with the convenience of traditional dog food.

Meals typically consists of raw meat, organs, bones, fruits, vegetables, and sometimes supplements. The philosophy behind raw feeding is to mimic the diet of a dog's wild ancestors.

Weighing Up the Pros and Cons

Advantages

Disadvantages

Raw diets typically contain fewer additives, preservatives and fillers that are commonly found in processed foods. Preparing your own meals for your dog can be expensive compared to other foods such as kibble.
Your dog could achieve a healthy coat and skin due to the quality of proteins and fatty acids present. Raw meat carries a risk of bacterial contamination like Salmonella or Campylobacter.
You can tailor your dog's meals to meet their specific nutritional and health needs , making it easier to control their weight. Creating meals can be challenging as you will need to carefully consider the right ratios of ingredients to ensure your dog recieves the nutrition it needs.
Chewing on raw meaty bones can help your dog's dental health by reducing plaque and build-up. Many manufacturers do not specify 'bone' content which is typically used as a filler.

Nurture Them Naturally are a raw food manufacturer who believe in small batch manufacturing. Their meals come with or without vegetables with meat in the form of minces, boneless minces, chunks, bones and offal's.

As dog's can't process cellulose, they grind all of the vegetables twice to ensure your dog's can absorb all of the beneficial goodness. They use Kale, as it is a great source of fibre, calcium and vitamins.

What to Look for in a Good Raw Food

vet

Before transitioning your dog to a raw diet, it's crucial to consult with a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. They can offer guidance and ensure that the diet meets your dog's specific dietary needs.

Here are some things that you should look out for when choosing raw food:

  • Supplier should be registered with Defra.
  • Most pets will thrive on diets of roughly 10% bone, 80% meats, 5% liver and 5% kidney.
  • If buying pre-prepared, the meals needs to be complete.
  • Quality ingredients.

How Does Our Nutritional Rating System Work?

AADF Rating

  • When an ingredient list is fed into the algorithm, it reads through the list, identifying the quality and quantity of every single ingredient.
  • Our rating algorithm scores both the processing of the individual ingredients that go into the food and the final processing method used to cook them or preserve the final product.
  • Label Clarity: We deduct more points from foods with any vague ingredients and award awarding more points to foods that declare their ingredient percentages.
