Instant Review Generator

If you find a complete food that we're not yet listing, don't worry, you can still get an idea of how we would rate it with our handy Instant Review Generator. Scroll down for our guidelines.

Guidelines

In order to get the most out of the Review Generator, it's best to stick closely to the following guidelines:

In general, as long as the ingredients list is entered exactly as it appears on the packaging or on the manufacturer's website, the generator should provide a good idea of how we would rate it.

We are, however, still working on this tool and although we are confident that it can cope with almost all ingredient formats, some errors may still occur. If in doubt, please make sure the ingredients list follows these criteria:

  1. THE GENERATED RATINGS ARE ONLY APPLICABLE TO COMPLETE FOODS and should not be used to rate treats, complementary foods, mixers or individual ingredients.
  2. The generator is only suitable for UK ingredient lists. Since ingredient definitions vary from country to country, our interpretation of an ingredient list may not be applicable overseas.
  3. Ingredients must be separated by commas.
  4. Ensure you double check spelling as any errors may lead to an inaccurate rating.
  5. Ingredients must be listed in order from highest percentage to lowest. If you have taken the ingredients directly from the food's packaging or from the manufacturer's website, this will usually be the case but it's always worth double checking.
  6. Nested brackets (brackets within other brackets) may cause errors and should be removed. For example, "30% Chicken (Fresh Chicken (20%), Chicken Meal (10%))" should be replaced with "30% Chicken (Fresh Chicken 20%, Chicken Meal 10%)".
  7. Not all ingredients necessarily need to be declared on the ingredients list. Some additives, for example, can be listed elsewhere on the packaging like under 'nutritional additives' or 'technological additives'. If you spot any suspicious looking ingredients outside of the ingredients list, just add them in the Advanced options' section before clicking 'go'.
  8. Other ingredients including some fairly controversial additives don't need to be declared at all so the only way to get a full picture is to contact the manufacturer and ask for a full ingredient breakdown including any undeclared additives.

If you notice any errors at all, please let us know

I've just started my 10 month old GSD on Concept for Life Large Junior food, he's a big dog for his breed (49.3 kilos at last weigh in) & both his parents were also big dogs, this food has good reviews on Zooplus & when I put it into the instant review generator it scores a 63% rating. Please could you do a review of this food to add to the AADF list? Does anybody else out there use this food for their dog?

I just put in all the ingredients *and* nutritional/technological additives and it comes up with an AADF rating of 57%, not 63% (63% is if you don't put in the additives). I hope this helps :)

We have 3 black labs and feed them mainly RC Satiety which I can't find on your list of 46 RC so I am keen to know what nutritional rating you would apply to this product. This would help to start making comparisons with other foods on you list. Cheers

I copied and pasted the ingredients of RC Satiety from RC's website into the generator and it gave an AADF rating of 43%. I would recommend finding a food for your dogs with a higher nutritional value. Hope this helps a bit!

Hello, I have recently switched my dog who is 13 months, onto Langhams Cuisine (Aldi own brand), from Lily's kitchen which is 3x the price! (5.99 for 6 x400g tins vs 15.99!) I used the generator to enter the ingredients and it came up with a respectible 83% for the chicken and turkey casserole. My pup seems happy, maybe could be added to comparison :). Thanks

Is there any change of reviewing both "Pooch & Mutt Primal" and also the new "Orijen Amazing Grains" range?

Also what are you thoughts on the meat contents of various dog foods? For example chicken/whole meats have a large percentage of water and depending on which way they are processed, a lot of this weight is removed. So with dry food the meat percentage may not be as high as seems. Is this taken into account when reviewing?

Many thanks!

The algorithm only recognises established pet food ingredients so I'm afraid it won't work on things like cocopops. As a rule, unless it's used exactly as recommended in the guidelines above, the review generator is essentially useless

All About Dog Food Vagelis Vivikidis 2 years ago

Hi Vagelis,

Unfortunately the ingredient list on that page is not in the correct order so the rating will not be accurate.

By law, ingredients should be listed in order from highest percentage to lowest but, as you'll see, 6% oat flakes comes after several 2% ingredients.

Since it's possible that other ingredients are also in incorrect positions, it's impossible to say what the likely rating would be

Hi Pudlice. According to those stated ingredients the rating of 85% would be about right but the final rating will depend on a few more factors than just the ingredients. It would also receive the high meat logo. Which page gives a rating of 80%?

Hi Paula and thanks for reaching out. I've had a quick look and it looks like the Supreme variety would actually score closer to 33%. For those unfamiliar with the brand, the ingredients are:
Whole maize, meat meal, soya oil, vitamins and minerals

As an experiment I entered the ingredients for AVA Medium Breed Adult into the box but replaced maize with barley. Replacing maize with barley would score 4.9 (with the maize the score is 3.8). Manufacturers should look at simple things they can do to make their food much better.

Many thanks for posting Sharon. Just to clarify, with barely instead of maize the food would score 4.1. In this case, to get an accurate rating you have to re-jig the ingredients list a little, placing all of the ingredients in descending weight order. So rather thanChicken (44%) (Chicken Meal 24%, Fresh Chicken 12.5%, Chicken Fat 5%, Chicken Gravy 2.5%), Brown Rice (23.5%), Barley (18%), Beet Pulp (7%)...You should enterChicken Meal 24%, Brown Rice (23.5%), Barley (18%), Fresh Chicken 12.5%, Beet Pulp (7%), Chicken Fat 5%, Chicken Gravy 2.5%...

Hi Karen,We have stocked this food for over a year and for the life of me couldn't understand why it is not on here either. It was only yesterday I stumbled across this generator and saw your comment which prompted me to take action.3 key things I noted when using this generator when pasting in the composition in to it are as follows:1. Either remove the encompassing meat content and leave the breakdown of it in, or remove the breakdown of the meat content - I prefer the forma to give the generator a complete picture of the foods composition.2. Remove "&" and replace with "," otherwise the following ingredient will not be included in the score3. Do not add any other informationResults of the food we stock are as follows:* Chicken Adult - 4.3* Haddock - 4.0 - For some reason this isn’t picking up the fact that the meat content is over the 30% threshold no matter how I write it* Lamb - 3.9 - This is because it has been marked down for containing pea protein. I am awaiting comment from the manufacturer on this - only requested yesterday* Puppy Large Breed/Junior - 4.3* Pork, Sweet Potato & Apple - 4.0* Puppy Chicken - 4.3* Salmon & Trout - 3.9 - For some reason this also isn’t picking up the fact that the meat content is over the 30% threshold no matter how I write it.* Senior/Light - 3.8 - For some reason this also isn’t picking up the fact that the meat content is over the 30% threshold no matter how I write it. Also lower because it has been marked down for containing pea & potato protein.* Superfood 80:20 - 5.0* Turkey - 4.1Obviously the Superfood 80:20 is and was always going to be the best of the bunch, but the others all have at least 50% meat content so are a good option for a marginally tighter budget, but also provide a good variety of flavours. I am surprised that the other have not scored higher using the generator when compared to other foods and would like to understand why. Our beagle Rocky loves it anyway :)There are a couple of other flavours available but these are the ones we stock. We are big advocates of only having great dog food without junk and have concluded that the food is such great value for the quality you get. The food's composition can be found here should you wish to copy and paste it in:https://www.pawsinpadstow.c...We really hope this helps.Kind regards,Mike

Hello, I brought my puppy home last Saturday and the food was a from GA Pet Foods or GA Pet Food Partners in the UK who promote retailers to private label their food any way they please. This food was bought in Ireland under the name D 11 Premium Puppy Food from Pets and More outlets. My puppy is having some intestinal issues. Until we get lab results I do not know if the food is the cause but just wondering if any readers have had experience of GA Pet Food Products or D II Branded Food from Pets and More in Ireland?

I have fed every range of ga gf for 10 years and have weaned lots of litters on their chicken and fish puppy options. This food is way superior to many out there and is highly reviewed. Ga also make dog food for other famous brands. It is not a scam it is just basically a big kitchen for dog food. They dont promote sellers to label 'anyway they please'.

Best way to describe it is when you buy aldi beans that are actual heinz beans label for aldi. We show, work and compete our dogs all over the world being fed on ga food. If you pup has issues it could be sooo many things. Parasites, stress, something picked up from the ground or even over feeding. Dont forget a puppy has only been alive for 8/9 weeks! Its a baby with a very new immune system. Hugs to your baby and best wishes for a good recovery x

Jan Wilson 6 years ago

I have a Romanian rescue who was very underweight and is a fussy eater. I was advised, not surprisingly, by Pets At Home to try AVA dry dog food which is their own brand. She eats it when she's ready, not over enthusiastically, but that is just her as I have tried other makes, I put the ingredients in and its come out as 4.8 out of 5. To say I am shocked is an understatement, I had expected it to be a lot lower as some of the expensive, 'good quality' foods that I was considering moving her onto have scored a lot lower. I am not sure if I have entered the ingredients correctly as the list starts Chicken (44%), (Chicken Meal 24%, Fresh Chicken 12.5%, Chicken Fat 5%, Chicken Gravy 2.5%) I am wondering if I should have left off the initial Chicken (44%) and just put the list of sources of Chicken as it may think there is more chicken than there is? Please can you tell me?

All About Dog Food Jan Wilson 6 years ago

Hi Jan, you are quite right that the initial 44% chicken will have thrown the generator off. I'm guessing we're looking at the AVA Medium Breed Adult Chicken variety? In which case the ingredients list should be entered as...Chicken Meal 24%, Brown Rice (23.5%), Maize (18%), Fresh Chicken 12.5%, Beet Pulp (7%), Chicken Fat 5%, Chicken Gravy 2.5%, Salmon Oil, Brewers Yeast, Minerals, Whole Dried Egg, Pre-biotic Fructooligosaccharide (1600mg/kg), Beta-glucans, Pre-biotic Mannanoligosaccharides (400mg/kg), Yucca Extract (200mg/kg), Glucosamine (200mg/kg), Chondroitin (150mg/kg), Yucca Extract (200mg/kg), Cranberry Extract, Green Tea Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Rosemary Extract.... which provides an approximate rating of 3.8 out of 5.The full reviews will be on the site very soon but I hope that helps in the meantime.

Hi Robert and thanks for posting. Whenever a rating is already provided on the website it should take precedence over any instant ratings generated here.

Just checked Oscars Pinnacle + which I have seen work wonders on dogs but on this algorithm gets slated. Descriptions of lignocellulose and chicken digest have a functional and healthy use but run down here. I have also been trialing for Insiders Wellness Core wet and dry food. The beef and chicken chunky centres recipes looked and smelled fantastic, so natural, the smell didn't linger like some foods can. Started my dog with half of the pot with the beef lamb and sweet potatoes, great natural ingredients. I expected him to be very tentative about a new food but was delighted when he started eating straight away and didn't stop until the bowl was empty apart from a few dry biscuits that I had mixed it with. An hour later, I put the rest in his bowl, thinking he would go to it as and when like he usually does but yet again the bowl was emptied. This is a first, I'm so happy to have found a product that I can be reassured has all the nutritional values that my dog needs without any additives. The chicken variety went down just as well, will definitely be buying the other varieties, they are more expensive than I would normally pay but so worth it to know I am doing the best for my dog.

Has been almost a month now and I can see Nino really enjoy the taste of Beyond Purina. Before I always had to mix something else to his food, but now he finishes everything!

Picked up some Irish Rover select treats with the tag line "super foods for dogs". The generator spit out a 4.2 rating. The packaging says 85% real chicken not sure what is meant by this. I would appreciate an expert opinion on this one. Is it legit? The ingredients are:
Meat and animal derivatives ( 85% real chicken), derivatives of vegetable origin, vegetables (. 4% sweet potato, 4% carrot, 4% pumpkin), minerals.

Hi Hugo and thanks for posting. First off the generator is only for rating complete foods so the rating for the treats isn't accurate. I'm afraid the ingredients list you gave doesn't quite add up. Obviously, the percentages of all of the ingredients should add up to 100%. With 85% chicken and 12% vegetables, that only leaves 3% for the derivatives of vegetable origin and minerals but since ingredients have to be listed in order of their percentages (highest first, second highest second etc.), there should be more derivatives of vegetable origin than vegetables which would make a total percentage of over 100% which is impossible. Does that make sense? Maybe you could email me a photo of the ingredients to info@allaboutdogfood.co.uk

When they add the word derivative it knocks the score down check out what derivate of chicken could mean same with derivative of vegtable origin

Problem with this generator - when the ingredients of an already reviewed dog food are entered into it, it does not give the same result as on the site. On the recipes I tried, it gave a full "point" lower. 4.2 becomes 3.2.

seems to work well when entering one ingredient at a time - eg. "carrots" scoring 2.6; "egg noodles" scoring 3.1 etc. very handy
