Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Our 4 month old miniature dachshund pup was having trouble with her poo’s when we had her on raw, they were really hard and chalky. She was also vomiting the raw up and had really itchy skin so we knew it didn’t agree with her (specifically the beef) We decided to change her food and try marleybones, and she absolutely loves it! Her poo’s are so much better, she hasn’t vomited, no more itchy skin and her fur is much shinier! Overall my pup loves this food, although it doesn’t smell the best it’s worth it for our pup. Her tail wags every time it’s dinner time.

All this information is out of date. No longer free-range and the ingredients/analysis is all outdated. Unfortunately it seems they have cheapened the products after they built their customer base.

I want to assure you our quality is as high as ever before! Although we have updated our recipes, we would never compromise on ingredients and still only source our ingredients from high quality farmers within the UK. We have simply increased the veggies and superfoods to give our recipes more visible chunky vegetables, less moisture, and a more meaty texture.

My dog got terrible diarrhoea with this food. It was so bad I took her to the vet who initially thought it was a bug but it happened again and again when reintroducing this food. She has been absolutely fine since stopping feeding it. PLEASE BE AWARE: if your dog has a sensitive tummy this probably isn’t the food for them because it contains quinoa which can cause upset.

My young spaniel also got a runny tummy at the beginning of the transition - I had wanted to see whether Marleybones would suit her, but having met this upset, and it was quite severe, there were two options - give the cartons that I'd bought away, or see if it was I who hadn't realised that she is quite so sensitive. I decided on balance that I'd been a bit over-enthusiastic in following the instructions and that instead perhaps she needed the transition to be made in very very tiny steps very very gradually - so after that I gave her a very very tiny amount for several days, then increased that by another very tiny amount again for several days, and so it went on - and she is absolutely fine with the food now with the much slower introduction. She is happy, and so am I. I also am feeding her other things, so this is only part of her diet at the moment.

Hi Sue, I’m so sorry to hear your darling girl didn’t tolerate our food well! We’ve carefully curated our meals to ensure optimal digestion, especially since Marley - our whole inspiration for creating Marleybones - suffered from indigestion so creating a food for sensitive stomach was always our highest priority.
All our proteins are highly digestible and we include chicory root in all our meals, which is unique in its fibre composition and provides extra support for sensitive stomachs. It is 68% inulin by weight which is an amazing prebiotic fibre. It's used by the ‘’good bacteria’’ in the gut as fuel so food is optimally digested, allowing for maximum nutrient absorption. In essence, this is a natural, daily prebiotic for your dog.
We also use fresh ingredients, which are filled raw into the cartons, the cartons are then sealed and steam cooked from the outside in. Steam cooking is one of the gentlest cooking methods, as it keeps all the natural moisture, vitamins and minerals coming from the fresh produce within the meals, locking in all the freshness, flavour, and nutrients. Not only that, but the moisture also ensures optimal digestion and urinary function.
We have omitted grains from our meals since they can be linked to intolerances, but high-fibre carbohydrates are very important in your dog’s diet, which is why we add in quinoa instead of your typical grain. Quinoa is actually from a tall spinach-like plant. We’ve chosen quinoa for its superior health benefits including 1) it’s a ‘complete protein’, containing all nine essential amino acids 2) it’s high in dietary fibre which is especially important for your dog’s digestion, blood sugar and weight and 3) it’s very high in minerals such as calcium, manganese, iron, copper, potassium and phosphorus which are critical for your dog’s health. Compared to white and brown rice, quinoa also includes much higher proteins, fibres and nutrients.

Harvey seemed to initially like this but has now started to have very loose stools with the beef flavour. He is allergic to chicken and won’t touch salmon. A pity there is no other option. The fat content in the beef is too high and peas are not a good ingredient for dogs. A shame as I liked being able to easily store the food and it’s clearly a pretty good quality, but unsure why it is upsetting my Poochon. I’m going to start weaning him on something else tomorrow.

Similarly to our beef recipe, our lamb meal doesn't include peas, in case he's intolerant to peas. We only include fresh garden peas in our chicken and salmon meals. Peas are super nutritious, while being low in calories - they actually include just about every vitamin and mineral you can think of, as well as being beneficial for gut health. I have sent them few emails to ask about the purine level of the food because they never mentioned their food contains livers/hearts on their website and they never replied.
They also have suggested me to feed my Dalmatian salmon which is high purine .
I would rather go back for the pooch and mutt wet food which is very similar and they have always answer my questions.
I feel like all about dog food is just rating the food by just looking at how much protein and how much carbs in the food which is doesn’t make any sense to me.
The Orijen one got 40ish % protein but FDA just warned it probably caused DCM in dogs because it contains a lot of meat + pea + highly processed .

Beware of this brand. I’ve found multiple bone fragments in the lamb food from two different batch’s. The company assured me they don’t use bone so clearly a issue with the manufacturer . Some of the fragments are approx 1cm by 1cm. I’ve checked the last three days of food v carefully and found fragments in all 5 box’s

The Marleybones website now says the Chicken recipe has 8% fat (up from 5.5%). If you need to feed low fat then this is quite a significant rise for a wet food.

Happy with the customer service and the food my dog gets although will be stopping the beef as it’s gone quite fatty. My dog has had pancreatitis and must be on low fat food. The salmon and chicken have done her very well. She’s been on Marleybones for over a year now after another supplier let me down due to their broken freezers. Yes it’s dearer than some but I believe it’s the best quality and ethical. I like the occasional gifts that get included. I like too that there is no freezer space needed which was a pain before. This is all stored in a cupboard.

So pleased to hear our chicken and salmon recipes are working well for you! Lamb and beef are naturally more marbled meats, however we have made sure to source as lean meat as possible. Because we only use fresh meats, the marbling can vary from cook to cook, as with any natural ingredients. It also makes sure our meals are always fully natural and delicious in flavour!

I've tried to order some of it for my dog to try but because he is only 2.3kg (yorkie) they say the food is going off after 2 days and half of the box would need to be discarded therefore no order was made. I think it is a fair customer service

My dog is quite small and is on a dry food breakfast, so 390g trays are big for her, too. I portion her food out to 2-3 days' worth and freeze the portions I'm not using, taking it out and defrosting in fridge the day before needed.

I have been feeding our puppy this for about 3 months and everything has been fine, but today after eating the beef flavour our puppy was sick and continued to be sick throughout the day until she had nothing left to throw up. I have noticed the last order of beef seems to a lot more fatty than previously and was wondering if this could have been the cause of the sickness. Has anyone else had a similar experience or noticed a change in the beef flavour.

Yes we have. It might be a seasonal thing to be fair but we pick the fat out, especially as my dog has to be in low fat due to pancreatitis. We shan’t be ordering the beef again. Happy with the chicken and salmon though.

Absolute garbage. My puppy has been sick with the beef, the lamb and the chicken pouch. The packaging is lovely but the product is a disaster even when served in low portion sizes. Whoever rates this at 95% needs their head examined.

This is excellent food. It comes in recyclable tetra packs which store well and look good. All my dogs love it. Including a fussy Pom. I feed with some Harringtons grain free dry food for a bit of crunch and save some money. It comes easily out of the packs and can easily be divided between dogs. Very palatable - smells nice. Excellent customer service and reliable deliveries. Highly recommend.

This looks like a good dog food. I like the ratio of meat to carbs. But unfortunately, it is not available in the US. I checked all the popular websites like Amazon, Costco, Walmart, Petcarerx, etc. If it is available on any other site, please let me know. Thanks!
