Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.

The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

I strongly recommend an insect based diet.
My TT had chronic ear infections for 4-5 years when a vet suggested it could be an allergic reaction. I found a holistic vet who helped tremendously and the cost was only equal to multiple treatments for ear infections.
I had to find a protein that N hadn’t had before, this meant a diet of pork. Pork mince and pork offal for a month (a kind of detox). We then introduced potato which we did using Burns Pork and Potato, but N was constantly hungry. I then discovered insect based dog food. I chose Aardvark as it was also grain free and the price was good (still expensive but cheaper than others). N has been on Aardvark for over three months now and has only had one flare up after eating something at my mothers.
SUMMARY - if your dog has allergies, or chronic ear infections, insect based dog foods are worth a try. NB no cereal or meat based treats should be given while trialling the food, or the trial becomes pointless. Try if for a month, with nothing else, I’m sure you will be pleased with the results

I'm so pleased I chose Yora as a substitute for our usual, very expensive, brand. What has really surprised me is that our dog Poppy loves this feed and has done from the first trial (mixed in 25% with her normal kibble). I had expected her to just tolerate the change of food, but I hadn't anticipated how much she enjoys it - in fact if I feed her old dog food without adding Yora, Poppy now refused to eat it! The other huge benefit is that her digestion is better and her bad breath issue has gone! A win all round. Absolutely delighted with Yora and thanks to "Pets Corner" for giving me a sample to try, along with samples of other kibble - this was the best by far. Wonderful product!

I was considering using Yora then I saw the high carb content particularly potato. Then I saw the price.....for 3 dogs we'd soon be in the work house. Will stick with Millie's Wolfheart.

Excellent Food. Most meat based dry foods are crap and cause allergies.I am a Yora Convert. It’s also about every ethical and caring about the environment etc . I am feeding 5 German Shepherds on it for past 5 days and they love it. No stomach issues.

I find it ironic that one of the keynote benefits of insect protein is that it is significantly cheaper to produce as insects have a shorter lifespan, take up far less square footage and a generally just easier to farm. Yet for some reason Yora think it's acceptable to charge 90 flipping quid for a 12kg bag of food made from it?

The grubs used for this food are farmed and harvested in the Netherlands, as no one in England will do it with such high ethical standards or care... this is why the price is so high at the moment. The overall cost of this food is expensive, it will most likely go down in price once more people are feeding it. There is no way this food could be cheaper, at this point in time, while maintaining the quality standards that are used. :)

Hi Joseph, I'm one of the creators of Yora, and I wish you were correct! The insect ingredients we use, are from a farm in the Netherlands called Protix. They provide us with frozen whole grubs, dried insect meal and even the fats from the insect. These ingredients all cost us a lot more than their meat equivalent because it's of such a high quality and created for purpose. Most pet foods use low grade meat meal which is a lot cheaper than our raw ingredient.Hopefully over time the insects will become cheaper as competition between insect farms intensifies, and we'll be able to pass the savings onto the consumers.

I think it only scored lower as the reviewers didn't have a score for this particular protein source. They only score foods for proteins from birds, mammals and fish ('meat'), but not from insects. So I would take the findings with a pinch of salt

Hi Freydis and thanks for posting. All of our published ratings are carefully considered and take into account all of the ingredients contained in the food. Yora isn't downgraded for its insect content as most studies show that insect meal is roughly as beneficial for dogs as generic meat meals. The main factors preventing Yora from scoring higher are its high potato content and potentially high maize content. I hope that helps.

The insect protein used in Yora has the same protein/fat ratio and levels as chicken meat, not meat meal. There are also 10 different grades of meat meal...going from awful (used in low grade foods) to really high grade (used in high grade foods), different insects also product different quality protein etc, so not sure how this statement is fair...
