Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
Information in italics is not usually avaialble on the ingredients list but has been provided to us by the manufacturer to help with our ratings.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

97 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique nutritional ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how healthy a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin: United Kingdom
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

My boy has pancreatitis and it seems to have been mild, after months of home cooking and using a nutritionist we got him back to full health and now we are using Different Dog. The quality of the food is extremely impressive, I have tried Butternut box but the fat content after calculating dry matter is not suitable for a dog like mine, where as Different Dog's trim me turkey and catch of the day are. They also don't add silly fillers like lentils and legumes. Very happy customer so far and hope my fussy boy continues to love this food.

I love this food. I wanted to go fresh for my dogs and first tried Butternut box, but the legumes in all their recipes didn’t agree with one of my dogs.
I switched to different dog and it’s perfect. I love warming it up for my 15 year old dog to spoil her, she loves it and I feel good about giving her the best food I can.
Only downside is the different dog website, it definitely needs some work, but we get there in the end.

I'm about to give this a go. Our dogs are on Butternut Box at the moment but I am concerned about the high number of lentils, peas, potato and beans in their recipes (every single recipe contains lots of them). I know the jury is out on legumes at the moment, but I thought if I could mix it up a bit the percentage of legumes in their diets will be reduced. This is still grain free by the looks of it, but with considerably less legumes. I will come back after they try it with their verdict.

I tried my pup on Butternut box too, he didn't really like it. I found the texture to be a little strange and it was very strong smelling on the herb side.
Switched to Different Dog and honestly, it sounds cliché but he really is a different dog! He gets super excited about his food now and polishes off the whole bowl in one go. This in the only dog food he's ever done that with and we've tried a few including dry, raw and homecooked. This is just like what I'd want to make him at home if I had the time and inclination to do that but now I've found this, I don't have to worry about home cooking and him potentially not getting all the nutrients he needs. It is expensive for dog food but it's worth it! Gets my vote.

Had a little problem with first order delay but my fussy staffy X licks the bowl inside and out. We are only just beginning with this food but with the variety provided, I'm hoping we found our niche. The veg in the food is super cool!!! And, may I say that her digestion has changed. Also, there is NO flatulence which, most of you know, is a Godsend. AND it is missing the usual dogfood smell which replicated in her faecies. It looks delicious enough for a human to eat. No worries, I won't.....

So far so good with Different Dog. Switched my Chihuahua over from Butternut Box because Different Dog have more variety and the food comes in a cardboard container, not plastic. My dog tends to have a poor appetite. Not with Different Dog! One month in and he's still clearing his bowl regularly. The ordering process is a little confusing but the staff are super helpful. The food looks and smells delicious. Although pricier, it's good value for a small dog and I waste less than I used to. Thumbs up for Different Dog from me.

I too was with Butternut Box for a long time but, as you say, they only have a limited variety. 4. I did not like the smell and the lumps of fat I had to pick out every time I cut open the messy pouches. So, hopefully, up and onwards from now.

This is the first food that my dog actually thrives on and doesn’t cause me tons of food wastage! Thank goodness for Different Dog! I highly recommend this food, especially for fussy dogs.
