Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

96.00 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin:United Kingdom
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Looking to purchase this food, but would like to know more about feeding practices, could somebody from Different Dogs or customers with experience tell me a bit more about how I would know how much to feed?AimeeG •18 days ago
Is it suitable for a 5 month puppy - nutrient wise? Is it classed as a ‘complete’ food?Steely •one month ago
This food is a different level to what we’ve fed before (Lily’s Kitchen etc.) Our mini schnauzer absolutely loves it and is thriving.Francesca •one month ago

How much of this should I be feeding my 9,5kg dog a day?AMB73 •2 months ago
This is the best food we have tried for our almost 3 year old cockapoo. She was previously on Butternut Box, but she was diagnosed with epilepsy and I was unhappy with the high quantities of lentils, pulses and other fillers in BB. Different Dog does not contain any cheap fillers. We stick to the red meat recipes as poultry is also a seizure trigger for her. I am pleased to report she has not had a single seizure since January 2024 when we started her on this food. Another bonus: poops are much firmer and smaller, and no more stinky farts either - (turns out those lentils in BB weren't doing her bowels much good!) Very happy with this outcome - highly recommend.Ciara Different Dog AMB73 •one month ago

Hi, yes all of our recipes are complete and can therefore be fed as a balanced and complete diet. We have 13 delicious recipes across 7 protein sources to choose from so there's something for every dog.S Mack •8 months ago
Been using DD for a couple of years with our gang of 7 and it is without doubt outstanding quality. Customer service is spot on and managing the account very simple. Not cheap i grant you but worth every penny as our furbabies are all healthy and additional vet visits very rare. Plenty of recipes so they never get bored. Highly recommendedSarah Different Dog S Mack •7 months ago

Does anybody add this to their kibble as a topper?Tammi Williams JJ1234 •8 months ago
I use half kibble and half DD for my lot and have been doing this for about two years. All are doing very well. I have a German Shepherd/St. Bernard, a Beagle and a Chorkie and it seems very good for all of them.Sarah Different Dog JJ1234 •7 months ago
Hi, absolutely! Some of our customers choose to feed our recipes as a topper alongside other food, which is an excellent way of accessing the nutrients from our fresh ingredients. When you fill your details in on our website, you can select whether you want to feed it as a complete meal or as a topper which will automatically calculate the correct amount and cost for your dog.Kate Lettie •9 months ago
Just had our first delivery of Different Dog & it looks great! My dog has epilepsy so I emailed to ask if there is any rosemary in the meals as it can apparently be a trigger and the team got back to me straight away to say it was okay for her, great customer service. There is a great variety of meals & I also love that the packaging is compostable and you can return the packaging, not many brands do this.Sarah Different Dog Kate Lettie •7 months ago

I switched to DD from butternut box as it's full of lentils. My dog also has seizures and it's so hard finding a product that doesn't contain rosemary. Thankfully my dog loves this foodLinda Lou •one year ago
Otis has been on different dog for a year now . He loves this except the fish supper one . He so active and keeps a healthy weight on it . Has turkey and venison recipes as said better for anal glands but still has problems with them. Vet said certain breeds can be prone . Wouldn’t feed my dog anything else but this foodYorkieT •one year ago

I was recommended Different Dog by several practitioners in the integrative vet care world when my elderly dog needed something other than raw. I am a firm believer in feeding species-appropriate fresh food and this fitted the bill perfectly. There is plenty of variety in the recipes and they don't use cheap inappropriate fillers which is also important. My dog loves it and is thriving. I would definitely recommend it.Anon8 •one year ago
Different Dog has been an absolute game changer. After a year of runny poo, episodes of diarrhoea and weight loss a change to Different Dog a couple of months ago has resolved our dog’s sensitive tummy issues. We previously tried both Butternut Box and Marleybones but neither worked for him. It’s not the cheapest but worth every penny and I would pay twice the price if I had to. He also absolutely loves it (although he eats everything)! I’ve been warming it slightly through the winter - it looks good enough to eat! Such a great range with lots of proteins and healthy recipes to choose from. Highly recommended.Jonathan Bore •one year ago
I thoroughly recommend this food. My Welsh Terrier loves it and he is noticeably livelier, more alert and more attentive, and is now the right size - he was slightly overweight and sluggish before. He doesn't beg so much for human food either because he thinks every Different Dog dinner is fabulous.Axle1 •2 years ago
Have just started using different dog, have been using butternut. Hoping change will help with our GSD puppy as he has skin problem. And as others have said I was a bit concerned with butternut fillers. Our pup eats anything so not about him being fussy. We are going for 80% × 20% dry as cost is prohibitive. Our other 3 dogs have home cooked with dorwest additives and cup of dry . With once a week butternut. Will let you know how pup doesJo McRae Axle1 •one year ago
I have just ordered Different Dog for the end of the month. Also changing from Butternut Box as my dog has skin problems as well. Have you seen an improvement??Tracey Payne Jo McRae •7 months ago
Best thing ever butternut caused my dog awful skin since off it hes much betterSarah •3 years ago
I love this food. I wanted to go fresh for my dogs and first tried Butternut box, but the legumes in all their recipes didn’t agree with one of my dogs.I switched to different dog and it’s perfect. I love warming it up for my 15 year old dog to spoil her, she loves it and I feel good about giving her the best food I can.
Only downside is the different dog website, it definitely needs some work, but we get there in the end.
