Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

93.00 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin:United Kingdom
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

I’ve been feeding my dog Tuggs Chicken Coup, and he loves it! His energy and coat have improved so much. It feels great knowing he’s eating something healthy and fresh.Tuggs emilywarner •11 days ago
Hey Emily, thank you for the kind words! We're so glad to hear :)Helen •one month ago
Hi, my dogs are currently mostly fed butternut box but I’m concerned about some bad reviews here of late. One of my dogs has had struvite crystals in the past, so I now try to avoid organ meats and both my dogs are Miniature Schnauzers so I try to avoid too much fat in their diets as too high fat food can cause Pancreatitis Which of your recipes would be most suitable please?Tuggs Helen •one month ago
Hi Helen, thanks for the message. All of our meat-based recipes use organ meats (heart/liver/lung) due to the nutritional value (and sustainability angle) of these cuts of meat. We've actually tested using recipes with different levels of organ meat and found that dogs overwhelmingly preferred the recipes with more organ meat. However, we do have a fish recipe (Cod Crew) which is lower in fat and would be appropriate for you to try!A S •6 months ago
My two doggos Bear and Rue both love Tuggs food. Never seen them so excited about their food. I can get two weeks worth of food in one drawer of the freezer too which is great.Tuggs A S •one month ago
SO happy to hear this, thank you for the feedback :)Ruth •6 months ago
Hi, I was trying to sign up to try my dog on your food but she is a mixed breed (3 breeds) which there is no option for, and it can't be left blank. Any advice as how I can proceed please?Tuggs Ruth •6 months ago
Hi Ruth, we do have an option for 'Mixed Breed' if you search this in the search bar. Any problems please send us an email at woof@tuggs.uk and we'll be on hand to help!Daniel •6 months ago
my dog has a intolerance to Yeast, he's currently on Butternut Box which contains Brewers Yeast, does this food contain Brewers Yeast? as Im thinking of moving him onto this food.Tuggs Daniel •6 months ago
Hi Daniel, none of our recipes include Brewer's Yeast, so your pup should be ok with Tuggs!Demi •8 months ago
Why has the rating gone down from 94% to 90%?Tuggs Demi •7 months ago
Hey Demi, our rating was changed around 12 months ago when AADF updated their algorithm. I think every brand on the platform was downgraded slightly as they changed how they calculated their ratings!Evonne Sargent •8 months ago
Hi do the pouches have to be stored in the freezer? Unfortunately we don’t have much room in our freezerTuggs Evonne Sargent •8 months ago
Hi Evonne, our pouches are frozen however you can keep 5 days worth in the fridge, and we can also deliver every 2 weeks meaning you don't need too much freezer space (gives you an excuse to finish the ice cream too!)Richard Allen •9 months ago
Is there a kibble you can recommend to feed alongside tuggs. I worry about plaque build up and like my pup to have some bite in his food?Tuggs Richard Allen •8 months ago
Hi Richard, we don't have any partnerships with kibble companies so we don't have one that we can suggest. In terms of plaque build up I would suggest reading a little more online about whether or not kibble actually does assist in cleaning teeth (spoiler alert - it's a bit of a myth). Nonetheless with Tuggs you can create 'half plans' and we will then send you half the amount of Tuggs that your pup needs, and you can mix it with another food!Nick E •10 months ago
Can I buy sachets without a subscription?Tuggs Nick E •10 months ago
Hi Nick, Tuggs is a subscription company as we use our algorithm to work out exactly how much Tuggs your dog needs to thrive, and we then send that straight to your door. However, the plan is incredibly flexible and you can pause/reactivate at the click of a button. When you order we start you off with a 2 week trial, so you can place an order and then you can pause if you wish to wait to see how much your dog loves the food before reactivating!simonburkdale1992 •11 months ago
Just made my first order, dog loving it so far and it smells amazing. Can I heat the food up too?Tuggs simonburkdale1992 •11 months ago
Amazing! We're so happy to hear. Yes, you can heat the food up in a pan or in the microwave for 20-30 seconds!jana1957 •one year ago
This is the best food on the market in my opinion! Tried this versus other raw and premium brands and Tuggs was the only one my fusspot would even entertain!! Very happy thank you guysTuggs jana1957 •10 months ago
Thank you Jana! Delighted to hear we've converted your fusspot and that they're thriving on Tuggs!Natacha1985 •one year ago
I've just ordered tuggs for my 8 week old puppy I went through the questionnaire and everything was OK. I come on here and it says from 4 months old. ? I'm a bit worried nowTuggs Natacha1985 •one year ago
Hi Natasha, thanks for your order! I'm not sure why it says from 4 months old here, that is incorrect and I'll need to ask AADF to change that. Our food is suitable for dogs of all ages - we've actually run quite extensive trials with puppies that you can read about on our blog. We compared puppies growing up eating Tuggs vs raw food and the results were very favourable for Tuggs! You can take a look here: https://www.tuggs.uk/blog/tuggs-better-than-raw-our-research-with-glasgow-university-studentsNatacha1985 Tuggs •one year ago
Great that you got the update.tbtrb •one year ago
So my two dogs have been on their subscriptions for about a month now and they are all the better for it. Took me a good month of research to settle on Tuggs but after receiving one of the highest ratings on here it was clear. The dogs are very happy, healthy and finish every bowl (one is fussy the other not so much). They only go to the toilet once a day now too which means their bodies are using up the food nutrients fully rather than it coming out as waste. Very surprised to be able to see the ingredients in the food too, so many carrots, potatoes, greens and all sorts. Not something you can do with dry or wet food. A nice extra perk is it’s much greener and sustainable too.Tuggs tbtrb •one year ago
So happy to hear your feedback! This is exactly why we only use the freshest meats, vegetables and insects in our recipes. If you haven't already, please do also join our Facebook community (Tuggs Club: Welcome to the Ruffolution)Amy Hughson •one year ago
Only in the transition stage from old food to Tuggs so a bit early to review health benefits but looking forward to finding out how it compares with old food. So far customer service / satisfaction has bee excellent with a follow up call after a few days to ensure we were happy . Advice given regarding feeding. Arrived well packages and on time . I was unsure if my very fussy dog would like the slightly softer texture of Tuggs BUT this not the case and she actually ended up leaving a bit of the old food . So all in all so far so good and fingers crossed it lives up to my expectations for health benefitsTuggs Amy Hughson •one year ago

Hey John, we're delighted to hear! Thanks for the kind words :)Georgina •one year ago
Fresh food with insects is interesting... why do you add the insects, for nutrition or sustainability? Considering giving this a try but would love to learn more!Tuggs Georgina •one year ago
Hey Georgina, thanks for the message. So we add insects for both reasons - the insects that we use are nutritionally akin to beef but with a far lower carbon pawprint (using a fraction of the land & water resources and emitting far fewer carbon emissions). They are incredibly dense in various vitamins, minerals and they contain all essential amino acids. Our ethos is all about reducing reliance on livestock and making more sustainable products where possible. You can read more information about the insects that we use and their nutritionally suitability on our blog at www.tuggs.uk/blogCarolec1976 •one year ago
I've been researching dog foods to switch my german shepherd to and like what i've read about tuggs (always like supporting the underdog too). Has anyone else with a german shepherd tried this food? It's rated very highly on here but also really like what i've read on their site with the whole insect thing, seems innovativeTuggs Carolec1976 •one year ago
Hey Carole, thanks for the message! We have lots of German Shepherds eating Tuggs, and with Tuggs you can create a plan that tailors to the metabolism of each breed; that way you can be sure you're feeding your pup with what they need to thrive! Any more questions to feel free to get in touch directly at woof@tuggs.ukkarenfabrics •one year ago
Hi there, is this a frozen product? And is it only online?Tuggs karenfabrics •one year ago
Hi Karen, thanks for getting in touch. Our food is all fresh frozen to retain the nutrition and, at the moment, is only online via our website! We create custom plans for dogs to ensure that they're getting exactly what they need to thrive, and not just survive, without sacrificing the planet. Recently made a decision to try fresh dog food and since switching to Tuggs there has been a noticeable difference in our dogs coat quality and she is now finally at a consistent healthy weight, which is something that we struggled to maintain beforehand. Would rcommend giving it a tryTuggs hollykk •one year ago
We're delighted to hear! Welcome to our fresh food ruffolution :)simonegregory •one year ago
Bagel used to be an extremely fussy eater, he would never eat dry food, we switched to raw food about 2 years ago which he loved. For the past two months we have moved to Tuggs for two main reasons the first being the environmental side, using insect protein and sustainable packaging. The second and most important is the health benefits to Bagel, since eating Tuggs (which he finishes in seconds) his coat has become silkier, he is more energetic and stools more firm!Tuggs simonegregory •one year ago
Hey Simone, we're so happy that Bagel has joined our Ruffolution. Thank you for the kind words!samstewart •one year ago
I've been feeding Tuggs to my dog for a few months now and I couldn't recommend it enough. She is normally really fussy and most other food gives her an upset tummy. Now she eats Tuggs, she finishes every bowl, she's not having any tummy problems and she's full of energy!Tuggs samstewart •one year ago
